From the Garden of Eden to the new creation in Christ : A theological investigation into the significance and function of the Old Testament imagery of Eden within the New Testament

The function of the Son of Man in the Gospel of Matthew is not settled. The majority of the research on the Son of Man in Matthew has been focused on the latter part of the Gospel, that is, Matt 21‒25. A gap still needs to be filled in the research—a consistent, theological understanding of the role of the Son of Man throughout the entire Gospel. This thesis argues that Jesus the Son of Man serves as the mediator of God’s will to his genuine disciples. The primary research method used is new redaction criticism, together with literary and social-scientific emphases. All thirty Son of Man logia are studied in their respective literary contexts and in relationship to the entire Gospel. In chapter one, a general review of Son of Man research is provided along with a sketch of representative literature on the Son of Man in Matthew. In chapter two, the Son of Man logia that relate to Jesus’ earthly life are studied (Matt 8‒12). In these passages, the Son of Man mediates God’s revealed will to his genuine disciples through his message and works. In chapter three, the Son of Man logia that relate to the Son of Man’s suffering, death, and resurrection are analyzed. The Son of Man’s journey to the cross demonstrates his obedient response to his Father’s will, which mediates for his disciples the self-denial and sacrificial allegiance to God’s plan necessary in genuine followership. In chapter four, the Son of Man logia that relate to Jesus’ parousia are investigated. The purpose of the Son of Man’s parousia will be to mediate promised vindication and reward disciples who have proven their fidelity to Jesus and God’s will. In chapter five a conclusion of research findings are addressed.

A Mediator in Matthew: An Analysis of the Son of Man's Function in the First Gospel

The campaign of Sennacherib against Judah is one of the most widely researched in biblical studies and Ancient Near East studies, and one that also poses scholarly challenges. Allusion to the event is found in Isaiah, Kings, and Chronicles, but there is no correlation between the Assyrian and biblical descriptions of the same event. Dan'el Kahn offers a text-critical analysis of these biblical passages that allude to the military events. Detecting repetitions, breaks in the narrative, and contradictions and inconsistencies in the texts, he traces and reconstructs different and discrete sources. Kahn demonstrates that the biblical passages are based on earlier sources that were later edited and revised by a third hand. Based on historical events that are found in non-biblical texts, he also offers new dates for the sources. He claims that the narrative was written for the book of Isaiah, arguing that it predates the version found in Kings.

Sennacherib's Campaign against Judah: A Source Analysis of Isaiah 36-37

Isaiah 36-39 is a coherent literary unity that both holds priority over II Kings 18-20 and reflects a historically reliable interpretation of the events surrounding Sennacherib's invasion. On a literary level, Isaiah 36-39 shows itself to be a vital piece of the overall literary structure of Proto-Isaiah in that it highlights the fulfilment of Isaiah's initial Immanuel prophecy in chapters 7-12. The historical occasion for the writing of Isaiah 36-39 is early on during the reign of Manasseh, when opinion in Judah would have been divided over how to interpret the historical events surrounding Sennacherib's invasion. Isaiah 36-39, therefore, sought to vindicate Hezekiah as a faithful and righteous king, Isaiah as a true prophet and YHWH as the one true God, in contrast to Manasseh's policy changes that clearly reflected his opinion that Hezekiah was a foolish king, Isaiah was a false prophet and YHWH was not powerful enough to protect Judah.

Isaiah 36–39: Rethinking the issues of priority and historical reliability

With the rise of narrative criticism within Biblical Studies, there has been an increasing recognition of the importance of reading biblical texts as literature. The meaning and message of a given text is intimately tied to the way in which that text is written, and that includes its literary structure, as well as any intertextual connections to other earlier biblical texts. This article will argue that a narrative reading of Jonah reveals numerous intertextual connections to both the ancient Near Eastern imagery found in creation/Eden accounts of Genesis 1—3 and the recreation/flood narrative of Genesis 6—9. The theological impact these connections have on the message of Jonah to its postexilic audience is significant, in that it addresses not only the issue of the re-created people of God, but also the importance and purpose of the Temple. This article, therefore, is essentially an exercise in synchronic readings and intertextuality set within the historical parameters of the postexilic Jewish community.
