The present invention is generally directed to a system for monitoring a variety of environmental and/or other conditions within a defined remotely located region. In one aspect, a system is configured to monitor utility meters (613) in a defined area. The system is implemented by using a plurality of wireless transmitters (614), each integrated into a sensor (612) adapted to monitor a particular data input. The system also includes a plurality of transceivers (221) that are dispersed throughout the region at defined locations. The system uses a local gateway (210) to translate and transfer information from the transmitters to a dedicated computer (260) on a network (230). The dedicated computer collects, compiles and stores the data for retrieval upon client demand across the network. The computer further includes means for evaluating the received information and identifying an appropriate control signal to be applied at a designated actuator.

System and method for monitoring and controlling remote devices

A surgical stapling instrument (1) comprises a body portion (2, 3), a handle (4) and a staple fastening assembly (8). The staple fastening assembly (8) includes a curved cartridge (10), which comprises at least one curved open row of staples, and a curved anvil (22), which is adapted to cooperate with the cartridge (10) for forming the ends of the staples exiting from the cartridge (10). The staple fastening assembly (8) is adapted to allow unobstructed access towards the concave inner faces of the cartridge (10) and the anvil (22). The cartridge (10) can be moved towards the anvil (22) from a spaced position for positioning tissue therebetween to a closed position for clamping the tissue. A lighting control device (10) for controlling electric power applied to a lamp (20) to control the lamp intensity. Such device comprises (i) a control switch (T) having a manually-manipulatable switch actuator (16) for controlling the closure of the switch; (ii) intensity-selecting means (R, L) for producing control signals representative of a desired increase or decrease in the lamp intensity, and (iii) a control unit (28), operatively coupled to said control switch and said intensity-selecting means, for causing the lamp intensity to fade from one steady-state level to another at a predetermined fade rate. According to a preferred embodiment, the intensity-selecting means (R, L) is independent of said control switch (T), and the control unit (28) is responsive to different types of switch closures of said control switch (T) to cause the power applied to the lamp to change level at different rates. According to another aspect of the invention, the control unit (28) is responsive to the intensity-selecting means (R, L) to store a preselected intensity level to which the lamp intensity will fade from a previous OFF condition in response to a closure of control switch (T), and indicator means (18) are provided for visually indicating said preselected intensity level.

A remotely controllable and programmable power control unit for controlling and programming the state and power level, including special functions, of one or more electrical devices. The electrical device can be an electric lamp. The system includes a user-actuatable remote transmitter unit and a user-actuatable power control unit adapted to receive control signals from the remote transmitter unit. Both the remote transmitter unit and the power control unit include a power selection actuator for selecting a desired power level between a minimum power level and a maximum power level, and control switches for generating control signals representative of programmed power levels of one or more power scenes and special functions. In response to an input from a user, either directly or remotely, the one or more devices of the one or more power scenes can be controlled between an on or off state, to a desired programmed preset, or to a maximum power level.
