Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific work is highly affected by the governments’ measures taken to reduce the spread of the virus. With closing colleges, universities, and kindergartens, scientists had to adapt to new forms of working procedures. Immediately after the peak of the first COVID-19 wave in Germany, we surveyed in professors and postdoctoral researchers in the field of German sociology in May 2020 to investigate how their work is constrained by these measures. In this research note, we present the results of this survey. They show that the position in the sociological field as well as demographic factors affect the degree to which sociologists feel constrained in their work. Postdoctoral sociologists feel more restricted in their work than professors, and qualitatively working sociologists more restricted than quantitatively working sociologists. Moreover, being a woman and having children under the age of 14 years increases the probability that sociologists expect to research less. Our empirical results shed some light on the effect of COVID-19 measures on working routines and inequality in Higher Education during the pandemic. Direkt nach dem Hochststand der ersten COVID-19-Welle haben wir im Mai 2020 Professor*innen und Postdoktorand*innen der Soziologie in Deutschland befragt, um herauszufinden, wie stark ihre Arbeit durch die COVID-19-Masnahmen eingeschrankt ist. In dieser Forschungsnotiz prasentieren wir die Ergebnisse unserer Umfrage. Sie zeigen, dass sowohl die Position im soziologischen Feld als auch demographische Merkmale das Ausmas der wahrgenommenen Einschrankungen beeinflussen. Postdoktorand*innen fuhlen sich starker eingeschrankt als Professor*innen und qualitativ forschende Soziolog*innen starker als quantitativ forschende Soziolog*innen. Zusammenfassung Zu den zentralen Aufgaben einer Professur an deutschen Universitäten gehört neben Forschung und Lehre die Beteiligung an der akademischen Selbstverwaltung, wobei sich die Hochschulforschung vor allem auf die ersten beiden Berufsfelder konzentriert. Die wenigen Erkenntnisse zum Engagement in der Selbstverwaltung beziehen sich vorrangig auf veränderte organisationale Aspekte. Dieser Beitrag zeigt, wie mit Hilfe der praxeologischen Wissenssoziologie untersucht werden kann, in welchen Orientierungsrahmen das akademische Personal innerhalb der akademischen Selbstverwaltung agiert. Dazu wurden teilnarrative Interviews durchgeführt und mit der dokumentarischen Methode ausgewertet. Im Ergebnis unterscheiden wir zwischen den „Hochschulmanagenden“, „Zurückhaltenden“ und „Pflichtbewussten“, wobei insbesondere der Orientierungsrahmen der „Pflichtbewussten“ erklärt, warum sich Professorinnen und Professoren wiederkehrend in der akademischen Selbstverwaltung gewissenhaft engagieren, obwohl sie der Forschung und Lehre den Vorrang einräumen.
