A technique for the measurement of blade tip clearance in a gas turbine

The efficiency of a gas turbine has an inverse relationship to the clearance between the rotor blades and the casing. Recent efforts in miniaturization of micro gas turbine engines have created a new challenge in blade tip clearance measurement. This paper describes the development of a capacitive tip clearance measurement system, based on a synchronous detection of a phase-modulated signal, for a palm-sized gas turbine engine with an integral ceramic rotor piece. A surface modification of the ceramic compressor and rotor with conductive coating is utilized to create a novel configuration of a tip clearance probe. The probe capacitance varies by approximately 120 fF for a 100-/spl mu/m blade displacement. Periodic autocalibration is used to reduce the effects of temperature drift on the sensor output. The remaining measurement error drift of 1.5 fF//spl deg/C was caused by the temperature drift of the probe parasitic capacitor. The random uncertainty was between 1.9 and 6.9 /spl mu/m depending on the tip clearance gap.

This paper describes a capacitance-based tip clearance measurement system which engineers have used in the most demanding turbine test applications. The capacitance probe has survived extended use in a major European gas turbine manufacturer's high-temperature demonstrator unit, where it functioned reliably at a turbine entry temperature in excess of 1800 degrees Kelvin. This paper explores blade by blade tip clearance measurement techniques and examines probe performance under laboratory conditions in support of high-temperature installations. The paper outlines the blade by blade tip clearance measurement technique and describes the experimental facility used to study tip clearance measurement. The paper also fully describes the method used to calibrate the measurement system in order to ascertain measurement accuracy. The paper clarifies how the practical problems were overcome associated with making blade by blade tip clearance measurements in both compressor and turbine environments. Since its initial development, gas turbine development programmes have routinely used the clearance measurement system. The inherent robustness of the system has resulted in reliable in-service measurement of clearance in real world applications.

Design Considerations for Tip Clearance Control and Measurement on a Turbine Rainbow Rotor With Multiple Blade Tip Geometries

The quest for higher performances and durability of modern aero-engines requires the understanding of the complex aero-thermal flow experienced in a multi-row environment. In particular, the high and low pressure turbine components have a great impact into the engine overall performance, and improvements in the turbine efficiencies can only be achieved through detailed research on the three-dimensional unsteady aerodynamics and heat transfer. The present thesis presents an experimental study of the aerothermodynamics in one and a half turbine stage, focusing on: the aero-thermal flow in the overtip region of a transonic highly loaded high pressure (HP) rotor, and the aerodynamics and heat transfer of an innovative low pressure (LP) stator with a multi-profile configuration placed downstream of the high pressure turbine, within an s-shaped duct. Advanced instrumentation and measurement techniques were used and developed to perform the experimental investigation in a short-duration turbine test rig where both high spatial and time accuracy is indispensable. The flow field at the rotor shroud was investigated with simultaneous measurements of heat transfer, static pressure and blade tip clearance by using fast response pressure, wall temperature and capacitance probes. Through repeat experiments at the same turbine operating point, the time-averaged and time-resolved adiabatic wall temperature and convective heat transfer coefficient were evaluated. In the frame of new engine architectures, a novel stator for an LP turbine is proposed with a multi-splitter layout that represents a new design solution towards compact, lighter and performing aero-engine turbomachinery. On the Aerothermal Flow Field in a Transonic HP Turbine Stage with a Multi-Profile LP Stator Vane

It is known that capacitance-sensing, rotor-blade-tip-clearance measurement systems suffer from a strong dependency on probe tip temperature and humidity. A novel in-place recalibration technique partly overcomes this problem through a simple modification of the electronics that permits a scale factor correction. The technique is used to reduce the errors in a commercial system by more than 50 percent up to a temperature of 370 C (700 F). A probe design is proposed to further raise the maximum temperature capability of the measurement system.
