A fabric treatment composition that includes at least one zeta potential modifier and a hydrophobic agent with a melting point or glass transition temperature below 100° C. that imparts fabric protection benefits, including improved stain resistance, oil repellency, water repellency, softness, wrinkle and damage resistance, and better handfeel to treated fabrics. Particularly preferred compositions include at least one zeta potential modifier in an amount sufficient to adjust the zeta potential of the composition to be positive and greater than zero millivolts. Particularly preferred compositions also include a fluoropolymer. The composition can be used as a pretreatment prior to washing, through soaking or direct spray application, or added to the wash or rinse cycle of an automatic washing machine, or used prior to or during the drying cycle of an automatic drying machine or refresher machine, or used prior to or in conjunction with an ironing device. The fabric treatment is complete when the fabric is cured by drying and/or heating.

In at least one embodiment, the present invention relates to a stain resistant, water resistant and water repellant treated textile fabric that can be prepared by a) selecting an untreated textile fabric having a first side and a second side, b) topically treating the untreated fabric with an aqueous primary treatment composition comprising a fluorochemical textile treating agent, c) drying and curing the topically treated fabric to obtain a primarily treated fabric, d) securing at least one polymeric film to one side of the fabric, e) providing a polymeric coating on the polymeric film comprising an aqueous secondary treatment composition comprising a fluorochemical textile treating agent, f) applying flock onto the polymeric coating, and g) drying and curing the polymeric coating to obtain a secondary treated fabric.

The invention relates to "closed loop" processes, systems and compositions for providing flame retardant properties to substrates containing at least about 5 weight percent of non-thermoplastic material, such as non-thermoplastic fibers, fibrous compositions or fabrics, and to treated substrates. The processes and systems are environmentally friendly, and advantageously conserve chemical compounds and water by recycling flame retardant composition. The processes generally comprise: (a) applying a flame retardant composition containing one or more flame retardant substances, an aqueous liquid and one or more adhesion agents to substrates; (b) removing excess flame retardant composition from the substrates; (c) permitting the substrates to dry to a low moisture content; and (d) recycling excess flame retardant composition; wherein the flame retardant composition does not contain an amount of a dye or other agent that could contaminate the flame retardant composition.

Methods, Systems, and Compositions for Fire Retarding Substrates

Water repellant, stain resistant, weatherable, and transfer printable coated fabrics are provided by coating synthetic woven textile fabric with an IPN (interpenetrating polymer network)--containing aqueous coating which is composed of both acrylic and polyurethane lattices also including a crosslinker. Upon elevated temperature cure, the coating forms an interpenetrating polymer network and provides a non-leather like fabric with the hand and feel of high quality woven fabric with the ability to transmit water vapor while being virtually totally water repellant.

Flame resistant fabrics of suitable strength and comfort level for use in apparel applications. The fabrics incorporate yarns utilizing specific blends of (A) halogen containing fibers, (B) silica embedded cellulosic fibers and (C) strength imparting synthetic fibers.

A coating composition useful for imparting fire resistance and water-repellency to fabric comprises between about 5% and about 23% by weight of a liquid chlorinated paraffin, between about 20% and about 40% by weight of a resinous chlorinated paraffin, between about 4% and about 12% by weight of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, between about 3% and about 18% by weight of a fire retardant, and up to about 15% by weight of an organic solvent. A novel water-repellent and fire resistant fabric material, and a method of preparing such material by coating tentage fabric with the composition of the invention are also disclosed.
