TL;DR: The essence of meta-analysis is that it is the process ofcumulating andynthesizing effect sizes of a number of primary studies by the application of research, measurement, and statistical techniques.
Abstract: Meta-analysis is aimed at the generalization of primary research findings that seem to conflict with one another to draw simple yet significant conclusions. The essence ofmeta-analysis is that it is theprocessofcumulatingandsynthesizingeffect sizesof a number of primary studies by the application of research, measurement, and statistical techniques. Thus, meta-analysis not only is averaging of effect sizes by using statistical techniques but also is a form of research that has “such considerations as are normally addressed in conceptualizing, designing, and analyzing empirical research: problem selection, hypothesis formulation, definition and measurement of constructs and variables, sampling, and data-analysis” (Glass, McGaw, & Smith, 1981, pp. 23–24). Gene Glass proposed the term meta-analysis and co-authored the first book on meta-analytic methods. He commented that a meta-analysis should be INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF TESTING, 7(1), 89–93 Copyright © 2007, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.
