Systems and methods by which voice/data communications may occur in multiple modes/protocols are disclosed. In particular, systems and methods are provided for multiple native mode/protocol voice and data transmissions and receptions with a computing system having a multi-bus structure, including, for example, a TDM bus and a packet bus, and multi-protocol framing engines. Such systems preferably include subsystem functions such as PBX, voice mail and other telephony functions, LAN hub and data router. In preferred embodiments, a TDM bus and a packet bus are intelligently bridged and managed, thereby enabling such multiple mode/protocol voice and data transmissions to be intelligently managed and controlled with a single, integrated system. A computer or other processor includes a local area network controller, which provides routing and hub(s) for one or more packet networks. The computer also is coupled to a buffer/framer, which serves to frame/deframe data to/from the computer from TDM bus. The buffer/framer includes a plurality of framer/deframer engines, supporting, for example, ATM and HDLC framing/deframing. The buffer/framer is coupled to the TDM bus by way of a switch/multiplexer, which includes the capability to intelligently map data traffic between the buffer/framer and the TDM bus to various slots of the TDM frames. Preferably, a DSP pool is coupled to buffer/framer in a manner to provide various signal processing and telecommunications support, such as dial tone generation, DTMF detection and the like. The TDM bus is coupled to a various line/station cards, serving to interface the TDM bus with telephone, facsimiles and other telecommunication devices, and also with a various digital and/or analog WAN network services.

The camera unit (121) obtains image information corresponding to at least one of a still image and a moving image. The pictogram extraction unit (182) extracts at least one pictogram from the obtained image information. The controller (180) detects information related to the extracted pictogram, and displays the detected information to be overlapped with the obtained image information. In the mobile terminal, the controller (180) includes, as the detected information, at least one of previously recorded information and currently searched information related to the extracted pictogram.

A technique to switch between upper and lowercase alphabetic characters in a wireless communication device measures the period of time in which a numeric key is held in the depressed position by the user. If a numeric key is pressed by the user for a period of time less than a predetermined threshold time (212), the selected alphabetic character is displayed in a default character case. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold period, the character case is altered and the altered alphabetic character is displayed for the user (214). The user selects the desired alphabetic character by activating a selected numeric key one or more times corresponding to the desired alphabetic letter. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the threshold period during any of the button depressions (212), the system automatically changes to the altered alphabetic character case (214). The alphabetic character case is controlled on a character by character basis such that entry of a new alphabetic character uses the default character case unless the selected numeric key is again held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold.

System and method for character case control in a wireless communication device

A wireless communication device (100) contains a prefix storage area (128) containing one or more prefixes that may be automatically pre-pended to a destination telephone number. The destination telephone number may be entered manually by the user using a keypad (118) or automatically entered from a telephone number storage area (126). The system (100) analyzes the destination telephone number and determines whether one or more prefix pre-pending levels have been enabled. If enabled, the system automatically pre-pends the selected prefixes to the user-entered destination telephone number to generate a complete destination telephone number. The automatic pre-pending can extend to all telephone numbers entered by the user, or may be limited to telephone numbers in the telephone number storage area (126). Similarly, the system can be enabled continuously, or may be disabled when the user turns off the wireless communication device (100).
