Recent Books and Dissertations on French History

The aim of this thesis is to treat several developments concerning the Ecole royale militaire in Paris in an institutional context, specifically from the perspective of the men who established it and administered it. By considering the ideas which influenced it, which reached back centuries but were more directly articulated in the period following the creation of the girls’ school at Saint-Cyr in 1686, aspects of its debts to previous institutions and state projects are elucidated. The process which led to its creation, near demise, numerous reforms, and ultimate failure are chronicled. The purpose of its systems of proofs of nobility, poverty, and military filiation for prospective candidates are explained and placed in the context of debates on professionalisation and the nobility’s role. The concept of emulation and its place in the thought of the Ecole militaire’s founders is explained. The evolution of noble educational practice in the nearly two centuries which preceded its establishment is analysed, emphasising the continuities and breaks with established practice as found in religious colleges, riding academies, and princely education. Next, the implementation of and modifications undergone by specific elements of the curriculum are presented, closing with an overview of the final model adopted in the school as a result of various reforms. The study concludes with an overview of the range of charitable acts that the Ecole militaire engaged in, which were considerably diverse and went much further than the aid it was specifically set up to give to its needy students.

Institutional imperatives : control and change in the École Royale Militaire, 1750-1788

The French Revolution marks the beginning of modern politics. Using a diverse range of sources, Robert H. Blackman reconstructs key constitutional debates, from the initial convocation of the Estates General in Versailles in May 1789, to the National Assembly placing the wealth of the Catholic Church at the disposal of the nation that November, revealing their nuances through close readings of participant and witness accounts. This comprehensive and accessible study analyses the most important debates and events through which the French National Assembly became a sovereign body, and explores the process by which the massive political transformation of the French Revolution took place. Blackman's narrative-driven approach creates a new path through the complex politics of the early French Revolution, mapping the changes that took place and revealing how a new political order was created during the chaotic first months of the Revolution.

Louis XVI and the French Revolution, 1789-1792

Louis XVI was the central character in the French Revolution, a major turning point in world history. Yet he remains largely unknown or, rather, stereotyped as the stupid, lazy, weak, and ultimately treasonous king dominated by Marie-Antoinette.

This fresh investigation explains how the stereotype evolved and corrects it, with the aid of those few of Louis' contemporaries and later historians who have never entirely accepted its veracity and with new evidence published by the author. The new material enables the author to get to the bottom of the mind and personality of this wilfully enigmatic man and to attempt, for the first time, a reconstruction of his political thought.

The new light shed on the king also illuminates the French Revolution as a whole, which has too often appeared as Hamlet without the prince.
