This article revisits a topic central to the past and the present of comparative education: the theme of ‘transfer’. It outlines four ideas. First, that comparative education as a field of study, having begun in the study of ‘mobilities’, became diverted by other anxieties. Second, the article notes that the theme of ‘transfer’ is far broader than just exporting a quality assurance process or some other ‘fix‐it’ educational technique to another country. Third, the article asks how we may think freshly about ‘mobility’ and ‘transfer’ as a theoretical problematique. The conclusion of the article is that if we, as academics, are going to take themes such as mobilities, border‐crossing, and translation seriously, we have some unexpected challenges to sort out, including complex questions about ‘geometries of insertion’. For questions as difficult as those, ‘more research’ is not the only or even the best initial answer.

The Transfer, Translation and Transformation of Educational Processes: And Their Shape-Shifting?.

The Book of Hours was a 'best-seller' in medieval and early modern Europe, the era's most commonly produced and owned book. This interdisciplinary study explores its increasing popularity and prestige, offering a full account of the Book of Hours as a book - how it was acquired, how it was read to guide prayer and teach literacy and what it meant to its owners as a personal possession. Based on the study of over 500 manuscripts and printed books from France, Virginia Reinburg combines a social history of the Book of Hours with an ethnography of prayer. Approaching the practice of prayer as both speech and ritual, she argues that a central part of the Book of Hours' appeal for lay people was its role as a bridge between the liturgy and the home. Reinburg describes how the Book of Hours shaped religious practice through the ways in which it was used.

The fundamental review article DIE ALLGEMEINEN ANSATZE DER MECHANIK DER KONTINUA in the Encyklopadie der mathematischen Wissenschaften mit Einschluss ihrer Anwendungen, Bd. IV-4, Hft. 5 (1913) by Ernst Hellinger has not been translated into English so far. We believe that such a circumstance is really deprecative, as the insight reached by Hellinger in the mathematical structure of continuum mechanics seems, in some aspects, unsurpassed even nowadays. Hellinger's scientific manuscripts do not fill more than one and half boxes in library storage [2], but their impact on mathematics and mechanical sciences is profound. Indeed, the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle is still a fundamental tool in theoretical and numerical mechanics. The intent of this paper is threefold: i) to allow to those who cannot understand German to enjoy the reading of a crystal-clear and still topical article whose content has some enlightening parts, ii) to show that only one century ago the principle of virtual work (or virtual velocities) was regarded as the central principle in continuum mechanics and that Hellinger did forecast already then the main lines of its development, iii) to discuss some technical and conceptual aspects of the variational principles in continuum mechanics which some authors consider still controversial.

Exegesis of the Introduction and Sect. I from “Fundamentals of the Mechanics of Continua”** by E. Hellinger

Recent scholarship tends to consider the work Renaissance historiography, Counter-Reformation apology or some combination of the two. The approach to date has focused primarily upon the third and most sizeable part of Me'or `Enayim, the sixty-chapter "Words of Understanding".In this dissertation, I seek to state a claim to the purpose for the work, a chimerical task. I argue that Azariah de' Rossi wrote Me'or `Enayim neither as history nor as apology but rather to articulate his vision of a new Jewish identity for the Jews of his time and place - late 16th century northern Italy. Recognizing the dominant Christian cultural embrace of the Roman empire and the concomitant Jewish opposition to Rome, de' Rossi felt that the pressure of the Counter-Reformation left Jews with no viable way to be relevant to contemporary Italian culture while remaining Jewish. He proposed abandoning the account of the Jewish interaction with Rome, an account long contested by Christianity, and replacing it with the honor accorded Judaism by Greece, specifically the Hellenistic empire. Key to that enterprise was emphasizing the role in Jewish history of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy Philadelphus and even Gaius Caligula (a Hellenistic monarch by virtue of the fact that he reigned before the destruction of the Second Temple and the advent of the Roman empire).This purpose accounts for much that is puzzling about Me'or `Enayim. It explains why the book focuses upon Hellenistic history in general and upon the sources Aristeas, Philo and Josephus in particular. It explains why Roman history is either dismissed, in the case of Livy, or discounted, in the case of the Rabbinic midrashim accounting for the death of Titus by a divinely dispatched gnat. It explains why the work is comprised of three parts, for political identity is composed of a past, a present and a future.Most of all, I believe, my approach explains how both strains of current scholarship - the historians and the apologists - are right, but only in part. It is true that de' Rossi is interested in what actually happened: he takes the time to establish the Hellenistic respect for Jews, their priests and their Temple. And it is true that de' Rossi is eager to discard Rabbinic midrashim dressed up as history that can be debunked: for de' Rossi, Rabbinic midrashim are vital as ethical lessons, lessons of hope. But de' Rossi's interest in history is selective, and not simply because as a religious Jew he is incapable of removing God as a causal agent. De' Rossi privileges Hellenistic history over Roman history because while the latter is useless to Jews of his age, the former is revitalizing.De' Rossi's Me'or `Enayim is about the usefulness of history - namely, history in support of identity. In that, it is fruitful to think of Me'or `Enayim not simply as a Renaissance work of humanism or of a Counter-Reformation work of apology. It is also, and perhaps primarily, a Jewish work in the spirit of the Protestant Reformation's rearticulation of the religious past.

Reconstructing Jewish Identity on the Foundations of Hellenistic History: Azariah de' Rossi's Me'or 'Enayim in Late 16th Century Northern Italy

This work explores the institutional contexts in which the language was adopted and transmitted as well as the privilege it came to confer on those that studied it. Waquet demonstrates how Latin became a symbol of status and ultimately shows that rather than disappearing this has given way to a nostalgic exoticism such that water companies and car-models now use Latin names.
