A thrust augmentor heat shield for enclosing radially extending fuel pipes which can be attached to and removed from the outer duct wall from within the augmentor. The heat shield includes a hollow, elongate housing extending substantially entirely along the length of the fuel pipe, a nose projecting forwardly from the housing and received within a slot formed in the duct wall and a bolt for clamping the housing to the duct wall and urging the nose of the housing into the slot. The housing includes an opening between the outer duct wall and the diffuser wall for conveying cooling air radially inwardly along the housing, and openings along lateral sides of the housing in registry with the fuel discharge ports of the fuel tube. The housing includes a diffuser flowpath segment such that, when the housings are arranged in a spoke pattern, the segments form a continuous annular wall joined by splined connections. In an alternate embodiment, the outer duct wall includes a strut which extends from the duct wall to the diffuser wall and the housing is connected to it by a bolt and nose connection. With other embodiments, the housing connection includes a wedge-shaped cam mounted on the diffuser wall which jams against a correspondingly-shaped flared upper end of the housing. Another embodiment includes a collar contiguous with the diffuser wall and extended shank shoulder bolts for installation from inside the augmentor through the collar.

Thrust augmentor heat shield

A low turbulence, close-coupled mounting structure for a flame holder disposed in an afterburner section of a gas turbine engine is provided. The afterburner section has a plurality of angularly spaced, radially extending fuel injection nozzles, with a fairing surrounding each nozzle to form open ended heat shields about the nozzles. A flame holder having a first cross-sectional configuration is disposed in recessed portions formed in the fairings surrounding the nozzles. The cross-sectional configuration of the recessed portions is configured to substantially conform to a portion of the cross-section of the flame holder such that the flame holder is recessed into the fairings when mounted thereon, thus eliminating outward projections at the connection of the flame holder and fairings. The flame holders are secured in the recessed portions by pins extending through aligned apertures in the skirts of the flame holder.

A device for securing within a combustion chamber an injection manifold which is connected to the wall of the said chamber by a pipe section preferably curved into a ''''swan-neck,'''' said device comprising a linkage system connected to the manifold and to a reference structure such as a stabilizer in such a way as to permit the manifold to undergo displacement parallel to itself by maintaining two points on the manifold in an axial plane of the chamber that contains the point where the pipe section passes through the said wall. The linkage system may comprise two link rods contained within this plane and pivotally mounted about axes perpendicular to the said plane, and several pairs of further link rods pivotally attached by swivel or universal joints.

Fixing of fuel injection manifolds into combustion chambers

A discharge nozzle is provided having a centerbody and a conduit enclosing the centerbody and is operable to receive exhaust flow from a turbine discharge of a gas turbine engine. In one form the centerbody is symmetric and extends along the flow direction, rising away from a reference axis to a maximum position before falling and converging on the reference axis. A set of rings is disposed between the centerbody and the conduit and are positioned between the centerbody and the conduit.

Techniques to reduce infrared detection of a gas turbine engine

A low profile fuel injection system for a thrust augmenter to a gas turbine engine, for example, a turbofan engine, comprising fuel manifolds secured with the outer surface of the augmenter casing and arranged to receive fuel under pressure from a fuel source, fuel-connecting members containing flow channels and secured with the inner surface of the casing, injector valve heads containing fuel metering means and spaced circumferentially on the outer surface of the casing, and injector tubes having spray orifices and extending from the injector valve heads into the flow ducts within the casing. The elements are in communication with each other such that fuel from the fuel source is injected from the injector tubes into the gas flow within the augmenter to achieve additional engine thrust.

Low profile fuel injection system

The disclosure shows an afterburner for a gas turbine engine comprising fuel injectors and concentric, annular, V-shaped gutters which function as flameholders. Links are pivotally mounted at their opposite ends to the gutters and to beams. The beams are pivoted on the outer casing of the afterburner and align the pivot axes of the links and the bisectors of the gutters with the direction of hot gas flow toward the gutters in the ''''hot'''' condition of the afterburner to prevent twisting of the gutters when their material strength is weakest.
