TL;DR: This chapter provides an overview of the many applications of operations research (OR) techniques to energy sector public policy issues and describes the decision-oriented models.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the many applications of operations research (OR) techniques to energy sector public policy issues Several basic concepts are discussed in the chapter: (1) resource supply and depletion modeling, (2) price and non-price determinants of energy demand, (3) interfuel competition, (4) end-use modeling, (5) integrating energy supply and demand, (6) aggregate energy economy interactions, and (7) multi-sectoral energy economy interactions The market models are designed to project the supply, demand and pricing of energy fuels over time Such models are used to forecast future market conditions for the fuels, to study the impacts of current and proposed regulations on those conditions, to evaluate the impact of new energy producing and consuming technologies on the market balances, and to guide international negotiations on energy policy The chapter also describes the decision-oriented models The chapter discusses the emerging issues in energy policy and frontiers in energy policy modeling
