The disclosure describes systems for creating and authenticating printed objects (45, 46) using authentication and copy detection watermarks. For example, one verification system includes a watermark decoder (50) and a verification module (64, 66, 68, 70). The watermark decoder (50) detects a copy detection watermark in a printed object (45, 46) to determine whether the printed object has been reproduced. The verification module (64, 66, 68, 70) processes a message decoded from an authentication watermark on the printed object to authenticate the printed object or bearer of the printed object. The authentication and copy detection watermarks may be implemented as the same or different watermarks. For example, the authentication and copy detection watermarks may be separate watermarks embedded in an image that is printed on the object. The authentication watermark, in some applications, includes an identifier that links the object to a database entry with related information about the object.

A method and apparatus for automatically and adaptively generating tonescale transformation functions that are robust with respect to imaging systems, exposure conditions, and body parts. The technique uses the histogram of the digital input image, the cumulative distribution function of the histogram, and the entropy of subsections of the histogram to create the final tonescale transformation. Using these three functions, the histogram can be divided into a region of interest, a low-signal foreground region, and a high-signal background region. The tonescale is constructed to be substantially linear over the region of interest, joining smoothly with a nonlinear portion extending from the end of the low-signal foreground region to the start of the region of interest, and another nonlinear portion of the high-signal background region. The substantially linear region of interest and the entire image are subject to certain output density constraints to optimize the diagnostic utility of the final image. The technique depends entirely on the histogram of the input image, and, hence, it is adaptive and robust.

A method and apparatus for automatically forwarding digital images to a service provider. The apparatus includes a reading device for reading said digital images from a removable digital storage medium and a communication device for automatically forwarding said digital image data over a network to said service provider when a predetermined criteria is met. The apparatus has a unique ID known by the service provider which can be used to identify the apparatus.
