All these premises having, as I think, been clearly made out, it is impossible that the rulers now on earth should make any benefit, or derive any the least shadow of authority from that, which is held to be the fountain of all power, Adam's private dominion and paternal jurisdiction; so that he that will not give just occasion to think that all government in the world is the product only of force and violence, and that men live together by no other rules but that of beasts, where the strongest carries it, and so lay a foundation for perpetual disorder and mischief, tumult, sedition and rebellion, (things that the followers of that hypothesis so loudly cry out against) must of necessity find out another rise of government, another original of political power, and another way of designing and knowing the persons that have it, than what Sir Robert Filmer hath taught us.

Culture and Imperialism

Scholars of culture, humanities and social sciences have increasingly come to an appreciation of the importance of the legal domain in social life, while critically engaged socio-legal scholars around the world have taken up the task of understanding "Law's Empire" in all of its cultural, political, and economic dimensions. The questions arising from these intersections, and addressing imperialisms past and present forms the subject matter of a special symposium issue of Social Identities under the editorship of Griffith University's Rob McQueen, and UBC's Wes Pue and with contributions from McQueen, Ian Duncanson, Renisa Mawani, David Williams, Emma Cunliffe, Chidi Oguamanam, W. Wesley Pue, Fatou Camara, and Dianne Kirkby. This paper introduces the volume, forthcoming in late 2007. The central problematique of this issue has previously been explored through the 2005 Law's Empire conference, an informal but vibrant postcolonial legal studies network.

The Theory of Communicative Action, Vol. 1, Reason and the Rationalization of Society

In response to the emergence of the social enterprise phenomenon, many jurisdictions have enacted legislation to permit formation of entities that incorporate features of both companies and traditional charities. This article considers whether New Zealand should adopt similar legislation. After outlining the concept of social enterprise, the article sketches hybrid social enterprise companies in the United Kingdom and the United States, and weighs up arguments for and against them. Consideration is then given to the desirability of social enterprise hybrid legislation in New Zealand and the factors that would need to be present to make such a law viable. It is concluded that calls for such legislation would be premature in New Zealand.

Should New Zealand adopt hybrid social enterprise legislation

This is an important book for many different kinds of scholars. It is a major work in visual communication, and has won praise for its innovative reading of photographs as texts. It speaks to me more as a work of journalism history. For others, it will be a book about public culture more generally. Built by accretion through many studies presented in many forums over the past decade, the book carries an accumulation of meanings and audiences, but does so in a coherent fashion.

In February 2012, The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt, near Wellington, planned to host So It Vanishes, an exhibition by acclaimed Mexican artist Teresa Margolles, whose often shocking works seek to highlight how dispensable human life has become in the parts of Mexico riven by drugs wars Margolles’s installation would have used infinitesimal amounts of morgue water in a bubble mixture dispensed into an empty, silent room in the same building that sacred Māori treasures are housed The incorporation of water used to wash corpses in So It Vanishes, particularly in proximity to cultural treasures, would have been deeply offensive, indeed dangerous, for Māori people Following objections, the exhibition was cancelled This article analyses the cancellation of So It Vanishes and seeks to answer whether and how transgressive art and indigenous beliefs may be reconciled in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand
