Abstract: Chalcohalide glasses, which are mixtures of chalcogenides and halides, have recently received attentions as a new family of IR-transmitting materials. A systematic study on Ge-based chalcohalide glasses such as Ge-S-I, Ge-Se-I and Ge-S-Br was performed to elucidate the effect of halogen atoms on properties. The ability to control the refractive index of these glasses together with their long IR transmittance, good water durability offer some advantages to practical applications.
