Since DeLone and McLean (D&M) developed their model of IS success, there has been much research on the topic of success as well as extensions and tests of their model. Using the technique of a qualitative literature review, this research reviews 180 papers found in the academic literature for the period 1992–2007 dealing with some aspect of IS success. Using the six dimensions of the D&M model – system quality, information quality, service quality, use, user satisfaction, and net benefits – 90 empirical studies were examined and the results summarized. Measures for the six success constructs are described and 15 pairwise associations between the success constructs are analyzed. This work builds on the prior research related to IS success by summarizing the measures applied to the evaluation of IS success and by examining the relationships that comprise the D&M IS success model in both individual and organizational contexts.

Measuring information systems success: models, dimensions, measures, and interrelationships

We present a review and analysis of the rich body of research on the adoption and diffusion of IT-based innovations by individuals and organizations. Our review analyzes 48 empirical studies on individual and 51 studies on organizational IT adoption published between 1992 and 2003. In total, the sample contains 135 independent variables, eight dependent variables, and 505 relationships between independent and dependent variables. Furthermore, our sample includes both quantitative and qualitative studies. We were able to include qualitative studies because of a unique coding scheme, which can easily be replicated in other reviews. We use this sample to assess predictors, linkages, and biases in individual and organizational IT adoption research. The best predictors of individual IT adoption include Perceived Usefulness, Top Management Support, Computer Experience, Behavioral Intention, and User Support. The best predictors of IT adoption by organizations were Top Management Support, External Pressure, Professionalism of the IS Unit, and External Information Sources. At the level of independent variables, Top Management Support stands as the main linkage between individual and organizational IT adoption. But at an aggregate level, two collections of independent variables were good predictors of both individual and organizational IT adoption. These were innovation characteristics and organizational characteristics. Thus, we can consistently say that generic characteristics of the innovation and characteristics of the organization are strong predictors of IT adoption by both individuals and organizations. Based on an assessment of the predictors, linkages, and known biases, we prescribe 10 areas for further exploration.

A review of the predictors, linkages, and biases in IT innovation adoption research

Despite considerable empirical research, results on the relationships among constructs related to information system (IS) success, as well as the determinants of IS success, are often inconsistent. A comprehensive understanding of IS success thus remains elusive. In an attempt to address this situation, which may partly be due to the exclusion of potentially important constructs from prior parsimonious models of IS success, we present and test a comprehensive theoretical model. This model explains interrelationships among four constructs representing the success of a specific IS (user satisfaction, system use, perceived usefulness, and system quality), and the relationships of these IS success constructs with four user-related constructs (user experience with ISs, user training in ISs, user attitude toward ISs, and user participation in the development of the specific IS) and two constructs representing the context (top-management support for ISs and facilitating conditions for ISs). To test the model, we first used meta-analysis to compute a correlation matrix for the constructs in the model based on 612 findings from 121 studies published between 1980 and 2004, and then used this correlation matrix as input for a LISREL analysis of the model. Overall, we found excellent support for the theoretical model. The results underline the importance of user-related and contextual attributes in IS success and raise questions about some commonly believed relationships.

Information System Success: Individual and Organizational Determinants

In 1992, DeLone and McLean suggested that the dependent variable for information systems (IS) research is IS Success. Their research resulted in the widely cited DeLone and McLean (D&M) IS Success Model, in which System Quality, Information Quality, Use, User Satisfaction, Individual Impact, and Organizational Impact are distinct, but related dimensions of IS success. Since the original IS Success Model was published, research has developed a better understanding of IS success. Meanwhile, comprehensive and integrative research on the variables that influence IS success has been lacking. Therefore, we examine the literature on the independent variables that affect IS success. After examining over 600 articles, we focused our attention on integrating the findings of over 140 studies. Information Systems Success: The Quest for the Independent Variables

One result of the increasing sophistication and complexity of MIS theory and research is the number of studies hypothesizing and testing for moderation effects. A review of the MIS and broader management literatures suggests researchers investigating moderated relationships often commit one or more errors falling into three broad categories: inappropriate use or interpretation of statistics, misalignment of research design with phenomena of interest, and measurement or scaling issues. Examples of nine common errors are presented. Commission of these errors is expected to yield literatures characterized by mixed results at best, and thoroughly erroneous results at worse. Procedures representing examples of best practice and reporting guidelines are provided to help MIS investigators avoid or minimize these errors.

In pursuit of moderation: nine common errors and teir solutions

In previous implementation studies, the relationships between influence factors and information systems (IS) performance under the level of IS evolution were not empirically examined. The studies did not consider the evolution level of IS in examining influence factors of IS performance. They have tried to identify critical influence factors without considering the state of the IS and the IS department, that is, the levels of IS evolution.The objectives of this study are to examine the direct relationships between influence factors and performance of accounting information systems (AIS), and to identify the moderating effect of evolution level of IS on the relationships. In this study, the direct relationships and the moderating effect of evolution level of IS were hypothesized.The results of the empirical test suggested that there are significant positive correlations between the performance of an AIS and the influence factors such as user involvement, capability of IS personnel and organization size. It was also proved that the relationships between performance of AIS and influence factors are significantly influenced by the evolution level of IS. Hence, for the success of AIS, each influence factor should be considered differently in the degree of importance according to the level of IS evolution.

[연구목적] 본 연구는 외부환경 불확실성, 정보시스템 전략적 활용수준과 전략적 연계 촉진자 간의 적합 관계를 밝히고 이러한 적합 관계에 따른 기업성과 수준을 입증하게 된다. 이로써 제조 기업이 기업성과를 증대시키기 위해 외부환경 불확실성의 높고 낮음에 따라 어떤 정보시스템 전략적 활용수준을 견지해야 하는지 밝히게 된다. 그리고 해당 전략적 활용수준을 지원하기 위한 적합한 연계 촉진자의 수준을 규명하게 된다.<BR>[연구방법] 본 연구를 위해 기존 연구들에 근거한 설문지가 개발되었으며, 우편 설문조사 방식으로 표본 자료가 수집되었다. 우편 설문조사 결과, 총 105개의 표본기업 자료가 수집되었다. 그리고 분석 방법으로써 집락 분석이 주요하게 사용되었다.<BR>[연구결과] 본 연구결과, 외부환경 불확실성은 정보시스템 전략적 활용수준에 연계 촉진자를 통해 간접 영향을 미치는 것으로 추정할 수 있었다. 즉, 외부환경 불확실성과 정보시스템 전략적 활용수준 간에 연계 촉진자가 매개변수 역할을 한다는 것이다. 연구결과에 의하면, 안정적이고 확실한 환경보다 불확실한 외부환경 하에서 높은 수준의 연계 촉진자를 수반하는 높은 정보시스템 전략적 활용은 기업성과 개선에 크게 기여하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 정보시스템 전략적 활용수준이 높은 경우 연계 촉진자의 수준 또한 함께 높은 것을 알 수 있었다.<BR>[연구의 시사점] 결국, 본 연구결과는 정보시스템 전략적 활용에 따른 이점들이 경쟁적이고 불확실한 외부환경 하에서 더욱 구현된다는 것을 보여준다. 그러나 안정되고 예측 가능한 외부환경이어도 지나치게 낮은 정보시스템 전략적 활용수준이 기업성과 저하를 가져올 수 있다는 것도 시사하였다. 따라서 기업은 외부환경 대응과 함께 적절한 수준의 정보시스템 전략적 활용이 필요하다는 것이다.
