Towards a three-dimensional cost-effective registration of the archaeological heritage

Many projects concerning the protection, conservation, restoration, and dissemination of cultural heritage are being carried out around the world due to its growing interest as a driving force of socio-economic development. The existence of reliable, digital three-dimensional (3D) models that allow for the planning and management of these projects in a remote and decentralized way is currently a growing necessity. There are many software tools to perform the modeling and complete three-dimensional documentation of the intervened monuments. However, the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector has adopted the Building Information Modeling (BIM) standard over the last few decades due to the progress that has been made in its qualities and capabilities. The complex modeling of cultural heritage through commercial BIM software leads to the consideration of the concept of Heritage BIM (H-BIM), which pursues the modeling of architectural elements, according to artistic, historical, and constructive typologies. In addition, H-BIM is considered to be an emerging technology that enables us to understand, document, advertize, and virtually reconstruct the built heritage. This article is a review of the existing literature on H-BIM and its effective implementation in the cultural heritage sector, exploring the effectiveness and the usefulness of the different methodologies that were developed to model families of elements of interest.

A Review of Heritage Building Information Modeling (H-BIM)

Integrating radar and laser-based remote sensing techniques for monitoring structural deformation of archaeological monuments

Archaeology is a destructive discipline, and, unfortunately, the majority of methods employed by archaeologists to record and preserve the archaeological record consist of two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional (3D) subjects. Recent breakthroughs in 3D technology, however, have the potential to revolutionize the discipline. In recent years, multiple software suites capable of generating spatially accurate, photorealistic 3D models with a series of digital photographs have become available. Following a successful season of field testing in 2011, the Tel Akko Total Archaeology Project (Akko, Israel) expanded the use of Agisoft’s PhotoScan Pro—one of the commercially available software suites—to test the accuracy and suitability of the program for archaeological applications at multiple scales. After two years of field testing, it is clear that the implementation of PhotoScan Pro in archaeology facilitates unprecedented accuracy in field recording and digital heritage management, and provides a new outlet for the dissemination of archaeological data.

The Tel Akko Total Archaeology Project (Akko, Israel): Assessing the suitability of multi-scale 3D field recording in archaeology

In the course of their research campaign in Siberia, Ghent University archaeologists have developed a simple and cost effective method for the rapid 3D imaging of rock art, standing stelae and surface monuments. Their procedure will undoubtedly have a big role to play in archaeological research in advance of the oil pipeline expected soon.

Three-dimensional recording of archaeological remains in the Altai Mountains

A practical approach to making accurate 3D layouts of interesting cultural heritage sites through digital models

In this paper, a solution for the automatic raw foundry brake disk dimensional characterisation and visual inspection for the automotive industry is presented. Three different computer vision techniques are used: a calibrated 3D structured-light vision technique, for dimensional characterisation and inspection; a 3D uncalibrated structured-light vision technique for local fault detection; and a common 2D-vision technique for a further local fault recognition. A new and fully automated 3D-calibration procedure for piece dimensional characterisation is also described. The whole system is an accurately synchronised blending of mechanics, automation, computer vision and robotics. Results from industrial implementation are presented.

Total quality control for automotive raw foundry brake disks

The purpose of this paper is just detailing a state-of-the-art procedure for the automatic recognition of specific 3D shapes from point clouds of immovable heritage assets supported on a tailored tool using PLY, PTX and PTS formats as input files. To make this tool functional and widely used, it is currently developed as a plug-in for the well-known and representative REVIT BIM software package.
