Triglyceride oil derived from marine sources, mammalian and fish, is treated with a silica at relatively low temperature under vacuum and is then further treated with a bleaching clay under vacuum and at higher temperature. The silica and the bleaching clay are then separated from the oil. The oil treated by this method is essentially free of proteinaceous materials, phosphatides and mucilage, pro-oxidant metals and very low in colored compounds, and is suitable for deodorizing. The deodorized oil is completely bland, unchanged in the concentration of the long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids (EPA, DPA and DHA), very low in color, peroxides and secondary oxidation products, free of pesticides and has very good flavor stability. The method avoids the use of any chemicals, such as in the acid and base treatments required in conventional degumming and alkali refining of oils of marine origin. This avoids the formation of artifacts in the oil and trace contamination with chemicals. It also reduces the number of process steps required to produce deodorized food oil from marine sources, which is advantageous in respect to oil quality, process losses and processing costs. The method is especially environmentally advantageous, since it avoids the need for soapstock and waste water processing entirely. Refined oil produced by the method is useful as a nutritional supplement and in methods of therapy or medical treatment.

Process of converting rendered triglyceride oil from marine sources into bland, stable oil

Fully or partially refined marine oil is stabilized by treatment with silica and the incorporation of a lecithin, ascorbyl palmitate and a tocopherol in the thus-treated oil.

Stabilization of marine oils

Silica having a large pore volume and specific surface area, controlled pore properties and also excellent hydrothermal resistance is provided. The silica has the following properties: (a) a pore volume of the silica is larger than 1.6 ml/g and is 3.0 ml/g or less; (b) a specific surface area of the silica is between 100 and 1000 m 2 /g; (c) a mode pore diameter (D max ) of the silica is 5 nm or more; (d) a value of Q 4 /Q 3 in a solid-state Si nuclear magnetic resonance (hereinafter called solid-state Si NMR) spectrum of the silica is 1.2 or more; and (e) the silica is amorphous; and (f) a total content of metal impurities in the silica is 100 ppm or less. The silica can be suitably used in fields which require particularly large pore volume and specific surface area, excellent hydrothermal resistance moreover controlled pore properties, and also the fact that physical properties scarcely change over a long period of time.

A method and system for the enzymatic treatment of a lipid containing feedstock comprises contacting the feedstock with a processing aid, then causing the feedstock to pass at a substantially constant flow rate through a treatment system comprising a plurality of enzyme-containing fixed bed reactors connected to one another in series. The fixed bed reactors can be individually serviceable, the flow rate of the feedstock remaining substantially constant through the system when one of the fixed bed reactors is taken off line for servicing. In the most preferred embodiment, the processing aid is a substantially moisture-free silica. The processing aid can be placed in one or more of the fixed bed reactors, disposed above the enzyme in the reactor, or it can be in a pre-treatment system which can comprise one or more reactors.

Continuous process and apparatus for enzymatic treatment of lipids

This invention relates to the refining of glyceride oils in the food industry. More particularly, this invention is directed to the removal of free fatty acids and soapstock from oils during refining. The method and apparatus of the invention contact the crude glyceride oil with an agglomerating agent, preferably a soluble silicate solution, such that the contaminants agglomerate in a discrete phase. This discrete phase is separated from the liquid oil phase through physical separation means, preferably filtration.

The invention relates to a process for refining glyceride oil comprising the steps of contacting the oil with amorphous silica, wherein said silica is selected from the group of precipitated amorphous silicas having a surface area of at least 400 m2 /g in pores with a diameter from at least 2 nm.
