TL;DR: The initial studies that have been carried out at the University of Rochester to develop a machine-oriented system of selection and acquisition of the world-wide literature in diabetes, which is to serve as the first level of retrieval in the over-all system are described.
Abstract: SINCE 1959, a research project has been in progress with the specific aims of carrying out a study of the problems, methods and applications of modern computer techniques in the identification, acquisition, storage and retrieval of diabetes-related literature. This cooperative project, sponsored jointly by the American Diabetes Association (through its Diabetes Literature Committee) and the University of Minnesota, involves the participation of the University of Rochester, the National Library of Medicine, the Documentation Center at Western Reserve University in Cleveland and the University of Minnesota. This paper describes the initial studies that have been carried out at the University of Rochester to develop a machine-oriented system of selection and acquisition of the world-wide literature in diabetes, which is to serve as the first level of retrieval in the over-all system.
