A multi-mode base station includes a transmit standby mode and an active mode. Transmit standby mode of base station operation is a low power/low interference level of operation as compared to active mode. In transmit standby mode at least some of the synchronization signaling such as pilot tone signaling is reduced in power level and/or rate with respect to the active mode. In transmit standby mode, the base station has no active state registered wireless terminals being serviced but may have some sleep state registered wireless terminals being serviced. Mode transitions from active to transmit standby may be in response to: a detected period of inactivity, scheduling information, base station mode change signals, and/or detected wireless terminal state transition. Mode transitions from transmit standby to active may be in response to: scheduling information, access signals, wake-up signals, hand-off signals, wireless terminal state change signals, and/or base station mode change signals.

Methods and apparatus for use in a wireless communications system that uses a multi-mode base station

A communications system extends over a cellular region formed of a plurality of wireless cells where each cell covers a portion of the cellular region. Each cell has a base station clock unit that facilitates reliable and accurate synchronization with other clocks units in other cells using a master clock signal from a global positioning system (GPS) or other accurate frequency source. The clock unit in each cell includes a local clock providing a local clock signal for clocking the cell. A master clock source provides one or more master clock signals and a clock synchronizer receives the master clock signals and forms a synchronizing master clock signal for synchronizing the local clock signal. In one or more of the wireless cells of the communication system, the clock unit is a master clock unit which includes a clock distributor for distributing a distributed master clock signal to one or more other wireless cells having slave clock units.

An MBMS multi-cell coordination unit is provided to coordinate a plurality of evolved Node-Bs (eNodeBs) for transmission of MBMS data synchronously in multiple cells of the same single frequency network (SFN). The MBMS multi-cell coordination unit may be located in an access gateway or in an eNodeB. An MBMS multi-cell scheduling scheme may be preconfigured for the eNodeBs for synchronization. Alternatively, the eNodeBs may be synchronized dynamically.

The invention relates to synchronization of network elements in a network that uses master-slave synchronization. The use of the known monitoring bit MCB (Master Clock Bit) is expanded in the method so that it is transmitted all the way from the master network element, for example the mobile switching center (MSC). If one of the network elements located between the master network element and a specific slave network element, for example a base station, does not accept the received signal as the synchronization source because of its quality, the network element in question forces the MCB bit located in the signal that the element transmits further to state 1. If the transmission unit of a specific slave network element is locked to the signal which includes the MCB in state 1, or if the element is forced to revert to using the internal clock because of a fault situation of the signal, the transmission unit activates the alert. Before the start of and during the synchronization of the base station clock, the fault status is read from the transmission unit and the synchronization is prevented or interrupted if the alert is on. The alert is given to other units of the base station in question from which the fault monitoring unit further transmits it through a separate operations and maintenance network to the operations center of the network operator.

A loop protection mechanism including dynamically determining a link connecting two adjacent nodes of a loop in a communication network in accordance with a predefined criterion, and reconfiguring the loop so that the loop is broken at the determined link which is an optimal link in terms of the predefined criterion.
