An optical indicia reading terminal can comprise a microprocessor, a memory, and an image sensor integrated circuit, all coupled to a system bus, and a hand held housing encapsulating the two-dimensional image sensor. The image sensor integrated circuit can comprise a two-dimensional image sensor including a plurality of pixels. The image sensor integrated circuit can be configured to read out a plurality of analog signals. Each analog signal of the plurality of analog signals can be representative of light incident on at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels. The image sensor integrated circuit can be further configured to derive a plurality of luminance signals from the plurality of analog signals, each luminance signal being representative of the luminance of light incident on at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels. The image sensor integrated circuit can be further configured to store a frame of image data in the terminal's memory by converting the plurality of luminance signals to a plurality of digital values, each digital value being representative of the luminance of light incident on at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels. The optical indicia reading terminal can be configured to process the frame of image data for decoding decodable indicia.

An optical code symbol reading system includes a housing having a light transmission aperture, and at least one sound port formed in the housing. The system includes an optical code symbol reading subsystem for optically reading a code symbol in the field external to the light transmission aperture, and generating symbol character data representative of the read code symbol. An electro-acoustic transducer is disposed in the housing for producing sonic energy. An improved opto-electronic imaging system which is adapted for use with incoherently illuminated objects, and which produces final images having a reduced imaging error content. The imaging system includes an optical assembly for forming an intermediate image of the object to be imaged, an image sensor for receiving the intermediate image and producing an intermediate image signal, and processing means for processing the intermediate image signal to produce a final image signal having a reduced imaging error content. A reduction in imaging error content is achieved, in part, by including in the optical assembly a phase mask for causing the OTF of the optical assembly to be relatively invariant over a range of working distances, and an amplitude mask having a transmittance that decreases continuously as a function of distance from the center thereof. The reduction in imaging error content is also achieved, in part, by including in the processing means an improved generalized recovery function that varies in accordance with at least the non-ideal calculated IOTF of the optical assembly under a condition of approximately optimum focus.

Apparatus and method for reducing imaging errors in imaging systems having an extended depth of field

An optical reader is designed to be insensitive to specular reflection, particularly at tapered lead-in areas to the left and right of a coded record on a record member. The optical reader includes a photosensor that is oriented with its optical axis along the reader optical center line so as to be situated substantially perpendicular to the record member passing through a reader slot. There are upper and lower LEDs only, which are disposed respectively on opposite sides of the optical center line in a vertical plane. That is, the LEDs lie in a plane perpendicular to the path of a record member being swiped through the slot. In this way, no specular reflection at the lead-in areas will fall onto the photosensor. In addition, the effect of specular reflection occurring at areas of the record member in a plane perpendicular to its path of travel is reduced by a factor of two over an optical reader using a single LED.
