A process and apparatus for the dehumidification and VOC odor remediation of an air stream withdrawn from the passenger compartment of a transportation vehicle is disclosed which employs a continuously rotating wheel support and adsorbent selective for the adsorption of water and VOCs. The wheel is coated with a zeolite adsorbent selected from the low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-84, a rare earth exchanged zeolite LZ-210, a low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-64, and mixtures thereof. It was discovered that faujasites which have a zeolite structure including β-cages within which are located tri-valent cations exhibit a Type 1M adsorption isotherm for water which provides a good driving force for adsorption at low partial pressures and a heat of adsorption which is slightly greater than the heat of vaporization/condensation of water. A surprisingly significant increase in the thermal efficiency is possible as a result of the lower regeneration temperature of the adsorbent and the use of novel process steps.

Process and apparatus for dehumidification and VOC odor remediation

An apparatus and method for automatically regulating the environmental system of a motorized vehicle and other articles having storage compartments. As impinging air flow is directed through the cabin or compartment subject to environmental control it comes in contact with a desiccant filler contained within a desiccant wheel or canister. The desiccant material absorbs moisture out of the air stream. The resultant air stream, or the extracted moisture released into another air stream, may then be directed to the interior of the motorized vehicle or used in other parts of the system. The net effect is a decrease or increase in the relative humidity level of the air mass contained in the cabin or compartment of a motorized vehicle or refrigeration unit. As one portion or element of the desiccant filler becomes saturated, the other portion or element of the desiccant filler completes it's regeneration cycle. The air streams are altered so that the designated air stream remains in either the hydrous or anhydrous desiccant, thus producing a constant air flow containing either an increased relative humidity or an air stream with a reduced relative humidity to achieve the desired result. The apparatus includes, at least one moisture collection device having an inlet and an outlet, and a system of flow conduits or paths into and out of the compartment or cabin. The air streams may be directed to at least one heat exchanger, a pre-cooler, a compressor, or an evaporator.

Desiccant based humidification/dehumidification system

Pressure swing adsorption separation of a gas mixture, containing a first component and also a second component which may be at low or trace concentrations, is performed to extract the second component from the gas mixture so that a first product stream containing the first component may be substantially purified with respect to the second component, while the second component is concentrated to a high degree in a second product stream. Gas mixtures containing three components may also be separated. The apparatus of the invention performs the separation within a single working space.

Extraction and concentration of a gas component

A ventilation and dehumidification system for ventilating fresh air to a conditioned space. The system is comprised of a desiccant wheel for dehumidifying incoming air by exchanging moisture from an inflow current of air with an outflow current of air. The desiccant wheel is both regenerated and defrosted by a regenerative heater which is placed to heat the outflow current of air before the outflow current passes through the desiccant wheel. The system includes blowers in order to motivate the inflow and outflow currents of air. The system may also include heat recovery means such as a heat transfer wheel or a motionless heat transfer core. The blowers can be arranged so as to create an air pressure differential between the inflow chamber and the outflow chamber so that any leakage of air between the two chambers will occur from the inflow chamber to the outflow chamber.

Ventilating dehumidifying system

A method of conditioning a process stream of air in an air conditioning system wherein a process stream of air is dehumidified and cooled to provide a conditioned stream of air for introducing to a conditioned space, the method comprises the steps of providing an enthalpy wheel comprised of an adsorbent contained in a paper web, the enthalpy wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air can flow, the enthalpy wheel capable of regeneration by passing an air stream therethrough having a temperature and humidity lower than the process air. In the method, process air is passed through the enthalpy wheel to remove heat and moisture therefrom, and the enthalpy wheel is regenerated by passing air therethrough to remove heat and moisture therefrom. Thereafter, the method includes providing an adsorption wheel having a multiplicity of passages through which the process air from the enthalpy wheel can flow for adsorbing moisture, the wheel capable of adsorption of moisture from the process air and of regeneration. Process air from the enthalpy wheel is passed through the adsorption wheel to remove moisture, and the adsorption wheel is regenerated by passing hot gases therethrough to remove moisture. After passing through the adsorption wheel, process air is introduced to an indirect evaporative cooler having a dry channel and a wet channel separated by a moisture-impervious wall wherein heat is extracted from the dry channel through the wall to the wet channel, the process air from the adsorption wheel being introduced to the dry channel to provide cooled process air exiting the indirect evaporative cooler to provide a cooled stream of air having a controlled level of humidity. Air is directed to the wet channel of the indirect evaporative cooler, the air directed to the wet channel being selected from at least one of outside air, air returned from the conditioned space, a portion of the air from the enthalpy wheel, and a portion of the cooled air exiting the dry side of the indirect evaporative cooler.

Air conditioning system for cooling warm moisture-laden air

A sensible and latent heat exchange media (10) has a gas permeable matrix (12). The gas permeable matrix (12) provides passageways (14) through which an air stream can flow through the sensible and latent heat exchange media (10). The gas permeable matrix (12) is formed of a sensible heat exchange material (16) that is capable of absorbing sensible heat from a warm air stream and releasing the absorbed sensible heat into a cool air stream as the air streams flow through the sensible and latent heat exchange media (10). A layer of a coating composition (28) of a molecular sieve is applied to at least a portion of the surface of the sensible heat exchange material (16). The molecular sieve has a plurality of pores of a substantially uniform size such that the molecular sieve is capable of adsorbing moisture from a humid air stream flowing through the sensible and latent heat exchange media (10), and is capable of releasing the adsorbed moisture into a dry air stream flowing through the sensible and latent heat exchange media (10), but is not capable of adsorbing contaminants from either of the air streams. The sensible and latent heat exchange media (10) is extremely efficient in transferring both sensible and latent heat between air streams.
