A survey on deep learning in medicine: Why, how and when?

The parameters of support vector machines (SVMs) such as kernel parameters and the penalty parameter have a great influence on the accuracy and complexity of the classification models. In the past, different evolutionary optimization algorithms were employed for optimizing SVMs; in this paper, we propose a social ski-driver (SSD) optimization algorithm which is inspired from different evolutionary optimization algorithms for optimizing the parameters of SVMs, with the aim of improving the classification performance. To cope with the problem of imbalanced data which is one of the challenging problems for building robust classification models, the proposed algorithm (SSD-SVM) was enhanced to deal with imbalanced data. In this study, eight standard imbalanced datasets were used for testing our proposed algorithm. For verification, the results of the SSD-SVM algorithm are compared with grid search, which is a conventional method of searching parameter values, and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The experimental results show that the SSD-SVM algorithm is capable of finding near-optimal values of SVMs parameters. The results also demonstrated high classification performance compared to the PSO algorithm.

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) refers to an emerging area of interest for medical, military, and security applications. However, the identification of the features to be used for activity classification and recognition is still an open point. The aim of this study was to compare two different feature sets for HAR. Particularly, we compared a set including time, frequency, and time-frequency domain features widely used in literature (FeatSet_A) with a set of time-domain features derived by considering the physical meaning of the acquired signals (FeatSet_B). The comparison of the two sets were based on the performances obtained using four machine learning classifiers. Sixty-one healthy subjects were asked to perform seven different daily activities wearing a MIMU-based device. Each signal was segmented using a 5-s window and for each window, 222 and 221 variables were extracted for the FeatSet_A and FeatSet_B respectively. Each set was reduced using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) simultaneously performing feature selection and classifier optimization. Our results showed that Support Vector Machine achieved the highest performances using both sets (97.1% and 96.7% for FeatSet_A and FeatSet_B respectively). However, FeatSet_B allows to better understand alterations of the biomechanical behavior in more complex situations, such as when applied to pathological subjects.

Comparison of Different Sets of Features for Human Activity Recognition by Wearable Sensors.

Proper tuning of hyper-parameters is essential to the successful application of SVM-classifiers. Several methods have been used for this problem: grid search, random search, estimation of distribution Algorithms (EDAs), bio-inspired metaheuristics, among others. The objective of this paper is to determine the optimal method among those that recently reported good results: Bat algorithm, Firefly algorithm, Fruit-fly optimization algorithm, particle Swarm optimization, Univariate Marginal Distribution Algorithm (UMDA), and Boltzmann-UMDA. The criteria for optimality include measures of effectiveness, generalization, efficiency, and complexity. Experimental results on 15 medical diagnosis problems reveal that EDAs are the optimal strategy under such criteria. Finally, a novel performance index to guide the optimization process, that improves the generalization of the solutions while maintaining their effectiveness, is presented.
