Resonant inverters are connected to a high-frequency AC (HFAC) bus, where power is delivered to different locations for points-of-use power management. Such a power distribution system subjects to more perturbations and load uncertainties than inverters operating with single load. A novel voltage control method is proposed in this paper for a high-frequency full-bridge resonant inverter with series-parallel resonant tank. A modified one-cycle controlled phase-shift modulation is proposed to effectively compensate the input line variations. The uncertainty model of the high frequency resonant inverter is developed and analyzed with the resonant circuit component tolerance, input line and load variations taken into design considerations. The voltage feedback controller is designed based on the Hinfin robust control theory and is implemented with analog discrete devices. The proposed control scheme has the advantages of fast response for both input line and load perturbations. It also ensures a wide range of system stability and guarantees robustness of the power converter. Both simulations and experimental results are provided to verify with the theoretical analysis through an experimental prototype of a full-bridge resonant inverter with an output power of 150-W operating at 1 MHz and an output voltage of 28 V (rms).

A Robust One-Cycle Controlled Full-Bridge Series-Parallel Resonant Inverter for a High-Frequency AC (HFAC) Distribution System

A general method using /spl mu/ synthesis to design controllers applicable to pulsewidth modulated (PWM) converters is described. System uncertainties from component tolerances are included in the synthesis procedure, adding a quantifiable measure of robustness. Furthermore, these uncertainties have been implemented in a structured format which maximizes available system performance. A boost converter example is presented demonstrating the controller synthesis procedure and advantages of this method.

Generalized approach for /spl mu/ synthesis of robust switching regulators

Uncertainty models for the three basic switch-mode converters: buck, boost, and buck-boost are given in this paper. The resulting models are represented by linear fractional transformations with structured dynamic uncertainties. Uncertainties are assumed for the load resistance R=R/sub O/(1+/spl delta//sub R/), inductance L=L/sub O/(1+/spl delta//sub L/), and capacitance C=C/sub O/(1+/spl delta//sub C/). The interest in these models is clearly motivated by the need to have models for switch-mode DC-DC converters that are compatible with robust control analysis, which require a model structure consisting of a nominal model and a norm-bounded modeling uncertainty. Therefore, robust stability analysis can be realized using standard /spl mu/-tools. At the end of the paper, an illustrative example is given which shows the simplicity of the procedure.

Robust stability analysis for current-programmed regulators

The current trends in development and deployment of advanced switching converters have facilitated the unified activities in topology design, nonlinear analysis, optimization, and control. In this paper, by using nonlinear models of resonant converters, bounded controllers are designed to ensure a spectrum of performance objectives required. To attain high efficiency and power density, new converter topologies were developed. It is recognized that advanced closed-loop configurations must be designed to guarantee a spectrum of specifications and requirements imposed on the converter dynamics. The output voltage of converters is regulated by changing the duty ratio, which is constrained by lower and upper limits. In this paper, to approach design tradeoffs and analyze converter performance (settling time, overshoot, stability margins, and other quantities), the constraints and nonlinearities are thoroughly examined. Innovative controllers are synthesized to ensure performance improvements. To illustrate the control laws designed and to validate these algorithms, analytical and experimental results are presented and discussed. In particular, nonlinear analysis and design with experimental verification are performed and documented for a resonant converter with zero-current-switching.

Resonant converters: nonlinear analysis and control

This paper presents a method of designing optimal integer- and fractional-order proportional–integral-derivative (FOPID) controllers for a boost converter to gain a set of favorable characteristics at various operating points. A Pareto-based multi-objective optimization approach called strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA) is used to obtain fast and low overshoot start-up and dynamic responses and switching stability. The optimization approach generates a set of optimal gains called Pareto set, which corresponds to a Pareto front. The Pareto front is a set of optimal results for objective functions. These results provide designers with a trade-off look-up table, in which they can easily choose any of the optimal gains based on design requirements. The SPEA also overcomes the difficulties of tuning the FOPID controller, which is an extension to the classic integer-order PID controllers and potentially promises better results. The proposed optimized FOPID controller provides an excellent start-up response and the desired dynamic response. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the optimum integer- and the fractional-order PID controllers. Extensive simulation and experimental results prove the superiority of the proposed design methodology to achieve a wide set of desired technical goals.

Optimum Design of Integer and Fractional-Order PID Controllers for Boost Converter Using SPEA Look-up Tables

DC-to-DC resonant power converters have been the subject of much attention recently. These power converters have the potential to provide high-performance conversion without some of the problems associated with classical pulse-width modulation (PWM)-based converters, thus allowing for smaller, lighter power supplies. However, in order to achieve this, a suitable control circuit, capable of maintaining the desired output voltage under different operating conditions, is required. In the past, small-signal models obtained around the nominal operating points were used to design controllers that attempted to keep the output voltage constant in the presence of input perturbations. However, these controllers did not take into account either load or components variations, and thus could lead to instability in the face of component or load changes. Moreover, the prediction of the frequency range for stability was done a posteriori, either experimentally or by a trial-and-error approach. In this paper, the authors use /spl mu/-synthesis to design a robust controller for a conventional parallel resonant power converter. In addition to guaranteeing stability for a wide range of load conditions, the proposed controller rejects disturbances at the power converter input while keeping the control input and the settling time within values compatible with a practical implementation. These results are validated by means of detailed nonlinear circuit simulations obtained using PSpice.
