Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of the equilibrium response of articular cartilage in unconfined compression, confined compression and indentation
Rami K. Korhonen,Mikko S. Laasanen,Juha Töyräs,Jarno Rieppo,Jani Hirvonen,Heikki J. Helminen,Jukka S. Jurvelin +6 more
TL;DR: Values of the elastic parameters of the cartilage are dependent on the measurement technique in use and may depend on the indenter size in use, as well as the equilibrium response of articular cartilage under unconfined and confined compression.
Journal ArticleDOI
T2 relaxation reveals spatial collagen architecture in articular cartilage: a comparative quantitative MRI and polarized light microscopic study.
Miika T. Nieminen,Jarno Rieppo,Juha Töyräs,Juhana M. Hakumäki,Johanna Silvennoinen,Mika M. Hyttinen,Heikki J. Helminen,Jukka S. Jurvelin +7 more
TL;DR: The current results reveal the close connection between the laminar T2 structure and the collagen architecture in histologic zones.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fibril reinforced poroelastic model predicts specifically mechanical behavior of normal, proteoglycan depleted and collagen degraded articular cartilage.
Rami K. Korhonen,Mikko S. Laasanen,Juha Töyräs,Reijo Lappalainen,Heikki J. Helminen,Jukka S. Jurvelin +5 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the compression-tension nonlinearity of the tissue is needed to capture realistically the mechanical behavior of normal and degenerated articular cartilage in unconfined compression.
Journal Article
Biomechanical properties of knee articular cartilage.
Mikko S. Laasanen,Juha Töyräs,Rami K. Korhonen,Jarno Rieppo,Simo Saarakkala,Miika T. Nieminen,Jani Hirvonen,Jukka S. Jurvelin +7 more
TL;DR: Results show that collagen primarily controls the dynamic tissue response while proteoglycans affect more the static properties, and Experimental measurements in compression and tension suggest a nonlinear compression-tension behavior of articular cartilage in the direction perpendicular to articular surface.
Journal ArticleDOI
Quantitative MR microscopy of enzymatically degraded articular cartilage.
Miika T. Nieminen,Juha Töyräs,Jarno Rieppo,Juhana M. Hakumäki,Johanna Silvennoinen,Heikki J. Helminen,Jukka S. Jurvelin +6 more
TL;DR: Results confirm that T2 of articular cartilage is sensitive to the integrity of collagen in the extracellular matrix, but it does not appear to be an unambiguous indicator of cartilage stiffness, which is significantly impaired in osteoarthrosis.
