Supporting innovation for tourism development through multi-stakeholder approaches: Experiences from Africa

Although the significance of travel health risks is well documented, the process through which people assess their vulnerability and ultimately take on preventive measures needs clarification. The purpose of this article is to better understand factors underlying travelers’ health risk perceptions and their protective behavior. Using the health psychology literature, a conceptual model that incorporates multilevel psychological constructs was tested with 830 Australian outbound travelers. Worry was an important antecedent to both travel health risk perceptions and risk-protective behavior. Perceived control over health-related risks was not positively associated with risk perceptions but was positively associated with risk-protective behavior. Sensation-seeking propensity was negatively associated with risk perceptions but positively associated with risk-protective behavior. Travelers’ Health Risk Perceptions and Protective Behavior: A Psychological Approach:

The paper is concerned with the relationship between terrorism and tourism and examines the implications of the Bali bombings in 2002, the focus being on the period immediately following the terrorist attack. After a brief account of the incident, its adverse consequences for tourism in Indonesia and the wider Southeast Asian region are assessed, and the responses of official tourism and marketing agencies are analysed. Events are seen to have damaged tourist arrivals with efforts by the authorities to secure recovery through expressions of sympathy and regret, offers of reassurance regarding safety and security, domestic and regional promotion and discounting. While every situation is unique, these strategies have also been employed in other destinations experiencing crisis.

Terrorism and Tourism

Although mangroves dominated by Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle are extending over 6000 ha in the Tanbi Wetland National Park (TWNP) (The Gambia), their importance for local populations (both peri-urban and urban) is not well documented. For the first time, this study evaluates the different mangrove resources in and around Banjul (i.e., timber, non-timber, edible, and ethnomedicinal products) and their utilization patterns, including the possibility of ecotourism development. The questionnaire-based results have indicated that more than 80% of peri-urban population rely on mangroves for timber and non-timber products and consider them as very important for their livelihoods. However, at the same time, urban households demonstrate limited knowledge on mangrove species and their ecological/economic benefits. Among others, fishing (including the oyster-Crassostrea cf. gasar collection) and tourism are the major income-generating activities found in the TWNP. The age-old practices of agriculture in some parts of the TWNP are due to scarcity of land available for agriculture, increased family size, and alternative sources of income. The recent focus on ecotourism (i.e., boardwalk construction inside the mangroves near Banjul city) received a positive response from the local stakeholders (i.e., users, government, and non-government organizations), with their appropriate roles in sharing the revenue, rights, and responsibilities of this project. Though the guidelines for conservation and management of the TWNP seem to be compatible, the harmony between local people and sustainable resource utilization should be ascertained.

A socio-ecological assessment aiming at improved forest resource management and sustainable ecotourism development in the mangroves of Tanbi Wetland National Park, The Gambia, West Africa

Although tourism has long been promoted on the basis of its potential contribution to development, attention has been focused more recently on the developmental role of tourism in least developed countries (LDCs). Not only are a number of LDCs currently achieving the world's highest growth rates in tourist arrivals, but it is claimed that tourism should be regarded as an integral element of their development policy. However, despite the apparently successful growth of tourism in many LDCs, wider economic growth and development has, in many cases, not occurred. Drawing on research in The Gambia, this paper explores the challenges to tourism-induced development in LDCs. It reveals that tourism is not immune to the factors that determine a county's LDC status but that, although claims of tourism's developmental role should be treated with caution, the economic contribution of tourism may be enhanced in a number of ways.
