Journal ArticleDOI
Application of next-generation sequencing technologies in virology.
Alan D Radford,David A. G. Chapman,Linda K. Dixon,Julian Chantrey,Alistair C. Darby,Neil Hall +5 more
TL;DR: An exciting era of viral exploration has begun, and will set new challenges to understand the role of newly discovered viral diversity in both disease and health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cowpox: reservoir hosts and geographic range.
Julian Chantrey,H. Meyer,D. Baxby,Michael Begon,Kevin J. Bown,Sarah M. Hazel,Timothy Jones,W. I. Montgomery,Malcolm J. Bennett +8 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated conclusively that the main hosts in Great Britain are bank voles, wood mice and short-tailed field voles; however, it is suggested that wood mice may not be able to maintain infection alone, explaining the absence of cowpox from Ireland.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emerging Infectious Disease Leads to Rapid Population Declines of Common British Birds
Robert A. Robinson,Becki Lawson,Mike P. Toms,Kirsi M. Peck,J. K. Kirkwood,Julian Chantrey,Innes R. Clatworthy,A. D. Evans,Laura A. Hughes,Oliver C. Hutchinson,Shinto K. John,T. W. Pennycott,Matthew W. Perkins,Peter S. Rowley,Vic Simpson,Kevin M. Tyler,Andrew A. Cunningham +16 more
TL;DR: The first trichomonosis epidemic reported in the scientific literature to negatively impact populations of free-ranging non-columbiform species is reported, and levels of mortality and decline due to an emerging infectious disease are unprecedented in British wild bird populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transmission dynamics of a zoonotic pathogen within and between wildlife host species
Michael Begon,Sarah M. Hazel,D. Baxby,Kevin J. Bown,Rachel Cavanagh,Julian Chantrey,Timothy Jones,Malcolm J. Bennett +7 more
TL;DR: The transmission dynamics of the cowpox virus infection have been quantified in two mixed populations of bank voles and wood mice, through analyses of detailed time-series of the numbers of susceptible, infectious and newly infected individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lethal outbreak of disease associated with feline calicivirus infection in cats
Karen P. Coyne,B. R. D. Jones,Anja Kipar,Julian Chantrey,C. J. Porter,P. J. Barber,Susan Dawson,Rosalind M. Gaskell,Alan D Radford +8 more
TL;DR: Sequence analysis showed that they were all infected with the same strain of virus, but that it was different from strains of FCV associated with the virulent systemic disease in cats in the USA.
