Sex and testosterone effects on growth, immunity and melanin coloration of nestling Eurasian kestrels

TL;DR: It is indicated that a high level of testosterone in all nestlings in a brood entails costs, at least in terms of immunity, coloration and probably growth, and that sex differences in post-natal cell-mediated immunity, and consequently in the capacity to prevent diseases, cannot be explained bysex differences in circulating testosterone levels.
Journal ArticleDOI

Use of the hypo-osmotic swelling test and aniline blue staining to improve the evaluation of seasonal sperm variation in native Spanish free-range poultry

TL;DR: The results show that high semen quality is associated with long day photoperiods and extreme heat or cold appear to exert a negative influence on sperm quality.
Journal ArticleDOI

Semen cryopreservation for the creation of a Spanish poultry breeds cryobank: Optimization of freezing rate and equilibration time

TL;DR: The present results suggest that slow cooling rates are not recommendable when using dimethylacetamide and that the medium-rate 2-step freezing method may be useful in the establishment of a germplasm bank for Spanish chicken breeds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of FSH commercial preparation and follicular status on follicular growth and superovulatory response in Spanish Merino ewes.

TL;DR: In all the ewes, the ovulatory response was related to the number of small follicles present in the ovaries at the start of treatment with exogenous FSH and to theNumber of follicles that reached > or = 4 mm in size at estrus, despite differences in the pattern of follicular development when using different commercial products.
