Stories, and their ability to transport their audience, constitute a central part of human life and consumption experience. Integrating previous literature derived from fields as diverse as anthropology, marketing, psychology, communication, consumer, and literary studies, this article offers a review of two decades worth of research on narrative transportation, the phenomenon in which consumers mentally enter a world that a story evokes. Despite the relevance of narrative transportation for storytelling and narrative persuasion, extant contributions seem to lack systematization. The authors conceive the extended transportation-imagery model, which provides not only a comprehensive model that includes the antecedents and consequences of narrative transportation but also a multidisciplinary framework in which cognitive psychology and consumer culture theory cross-fertilize this field of inquiry. The authors test the model using a quantitative meta-analysis of 132 effect sizes of narrative transportation from 76 published and unpublished articles and identify fruitful directions for further research.

Following on from Tim Ingold's groundbreaking work Lines: A Brief History, it offers a wholly original series of meditations on life, ground, weather, walking, imagination and what it means to be human.



In the first part, Ingold argues that a world of life is woven from knots, and not built from blocks as commonly thought. He shows how the principle of knotting underwrites both the way things join with one another, in walls, buildings and bodies, and the composition of the ground and the knowledge we find there. 


In the second part, Ingold argues that to study living lines, we must also study the weather. To complement a linealogy that asks what is common to walking, weaving, observing, singing, storytelling and writing, he develops a meteorology that seeks the common denominator of breath, time, mood, sound, memory, colour and the sky. This denominator is the atmosphere. 


In the third part, Ingold carries the line into the domain of human life. He shows that for life to continue, the things we do must be framed within the lives we undergo. In continually answering to one another, these lives enact a principle of correspondence that is fundamentally social. 


This compelling volume brings our thinking about the material world refreshingly back to life. While anchored in anthropology, the book ranges widely over an interdisciplinary terrain that includes philosophy, geography, sociology, art and architecture.

The Life of Lines

Energy and climate change research has been dominated by particular methods and approaches to defining and addressing problems, accomplished by gathering and analysing the corresponding forms of evidence. This special issue starts from the broad concepts of stories, narratives, and storytelling to go beyond these analytic conventions, approaching the intersection of nature, humanity, and technology in multiple ways, using lenses from social sciences, humanities, and practitioners’ perspectives. The contributors use stories as data objects to gather, analyse, and critique; stories as an approach to research an inquiry; narrative analysis as a way of crystallising arguments and assumptions; and storytelling as a way of understanding, communicating, and influencing others. In using these forms of evidence and communication, and applying methods, analytical stances, and interpretations that these invite, something new and different results. This essay is a brief introduction to how, in our view, stories and their kin fit in energy and climate change research. We outline the diversity of data, approaches, and goals represented in the contributions to the special issue. And we reflect on some of the challenges of, and possibilities for, continuing to develop ‘stories’ as data sources, as modes of inquiry, and as creative paths toward social engagement.

This study examined the effect of adolescents' autonomous control and exposure to adult contents on their online sexual victimization experiences via the moderated mediation effect of education experience. The authors purported to investigate if adolescents’ experience of online sexual victimization can be prevented by their willingness to control their exposure to adult contents and by education. Specifically, independent variable autonomous control and exposure to adult contents based on lifestyle-related theory were employed in the analysis models. For the study, we analyzed the "2020 Youth Media Use and Hazardous Environment Survey", which collected by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and the data included the responses from 14,536 teenagers with regard to their online sexual victimization experiences. As a result, first, it was verified that the autonomous control of adolescents had a significant effect on the online sexual victimization by mediating the exposure level. In other words, the higher the autonomous control of adolescents, the lower the exposure level, and the lower the exposure level, the lower the online sexual victimization. Second, as a result of analyzing the moderating effect of education in the relationship between autonomous control and exposure level, both uneducated and educated groups had a negative effect, but the negative relationship between autonomous control and exposure level was stronger when educated. Third, it was verified that the mediating effect of exposure level in the relationship between autonomous control and online sexual victimiation has a significant moderating effect depending on the presence or absence of education. Finally, based on the results, suggestions were made for the intervention and development of various educational programs such as media use education, violence prevention education, and sex education to increase youth's autonomous control and lower exposure levels.
