Publisher Summary The fundamental assumption of all theories of plasticity—that of time independence of the equations of state—makes simultaneous description of the plastic and rheologic properties of a material impossible. I t is well-known that in many practical problems, the actual behaviour of a material is governed by plastic as well as by rheologic effects. It can even be said that for many important structural materials, rheologic effects are more pronounced after the plastic state has been reached. Every material shows more or less pronounced viscous properties. In some problems, the influence of viscous properties of the material may be negligible, while in others, it may be essential. Both sciences—plasticity and rheology—are concerned with the description of important mechanical properties of structural materials. Each of them has created its own methods of investigation and has developed within the framework of certain assumptions which, unfortunately, cannot always be satisfied in reality. The results of rheology are confined to cases where plastic strain is of no decisive importance.

Ultrasonic Guided Waves in Solid Media

Ultrasonic guided wave inspection is expanding rapidly to many different areas of manufacturing and in-service inspection. The purpose of this paper is to provide a vision of ultrasonic guided wave inspection potential aswe move forward into the new millennium. An increased understanding of the basic physics and wave mechanics associated with guided wave inspection has led to an increase in practical nondestructive evaluation and inspection problems. Some fundamental concepts and a number of different applications that are currently being considered will be presented in the paper along with a brief description of the sensor and software technology that will make ultrasonic guided wave inspection commonplace in the next century.

A Baseline and Vision of Ultrasonic Guided Wave Inspection Potential

Among the various schemes being considered for structural health monitoring (SHM), guided wave (GW) testing in particular has shown great promise. While GW testing using hand-held transducers for non-destructive evaluation (NDE) is a well established technology, GW testing for SHM using surface-bonded/embedded piezoelectric wafer transducers (piezos) is relatively in its formative years. Little effort has been made towards a precise characterization of GW excitation using piezos and often the various parameters involved are chosen without mathematical foundation. In this work, a formulation for modeling the transient GW field excited using arbitrary shaped surface-bonded piezos in isotropic plates based on the 3D linear elasticity equations is presented. This is then used for the specific cases of rectangular and ring-shaped actuators, which are most commonly used in GW SHM. Equations for the output voltage response of surface-bonded piezo-sensors in GW fields are derived and optimization of the actuator/sensor dimensions is done based on these. Finally, numerical and experimental results establishing the validity of these models are discussed.
