PLANETARY SYSTEMS, the solar system amongst them, are believed to form as inevitable and common byproducts of star formation For orientation, an overview of the processes described in this chapter is as follows The present paradigm starts with star formation in molecular clouds Brown dwarfs are formed as the lowmass tail of this process, although some may be formed as a high-mass tail of planet formation Gas and dust in the collapsing molecular cloud which does not fall directly onto the protostar resides in a relatively long-lived accretion disk which provides the environment for the subsequent stages of planet formation Terrestrial-mass planets are formed within the disk through the progressive agglomeration of material denoted, as it grows in size, as dust, rocks, planetesimals and protoplanets A similar process typically occurring further out in the disk results in the cores of giant planets, which then gravitationally accumulate their mantles of ice and/or gas As the planet-forming bodies grow in mass, growth and dynamics become more dominated by gravitational interactions Towards the final phases, and before the remaining gas is lost through accretion or dispersal, the gas provides a viscous medium at least partially responsible for planetary migration Some migration also occurs during these later stages as a result of gravitational scattering between the (proto-)planets and the residual sea of planetesimals The final structural stabilisation of the planetary system may be affected by planet–planet interactions, until a configuration emerges which may be dynamically stable over billions of years The current observational data for exoplanet systems is broadly compatible with this overall picture Other constraints come from a substantial body of detailed observations of the solar system (Chapter 12) Context and present paradigm An understanding of howplanets formis essential in understanding and interpreting the considerable range of observed planetary system architectures and dynamics Today, the most widely considered solar nebula theory holds that planet formation in the solar system, and by inference in other exoplanet systems, follows on from the process of star formation and accretion disk formation, through the agglomeration of residual material as the protoplanetary disk collapses and evolves

The first half of this paper explores the origin of systematic biases in the measurement of weak gravitational lensing. Compared to previous work, we expand the investigation of point spread function instability and fold in for the first time the effects of non-idealities in electronic imaging detectors and imperfect galaxy shape measurement algorithms. Together, these now explain the additive A(l) and multiplicative M(l) systematics typically reported in current lensing measurements. We find that overall performance is driven by a product of a telescope/camera's absolute performance, and our knowledge about its performance.

The second half of this paper propagates any residual shear measurement biases through to their effect on cosmological parameter constraints. Fully exploiting the statistical power of Stage IV weak lensing surveys will require additive biases A¯¯¯≲1.8×10−12 and multiplicative biases M¯¯¯¯≲4.0×10−3. These can be allocated between individual budgets in hardware, calibration data and software, using results from the first half of the paper.

If instrumentation is stable and well calibrated, we find extant shear measurement software from Gravitational Lensing Accuracy Testing 2010 (GREAT10) already meet requirements on galaxies detected at signal-to-noise ratio = 40. Averaging over a population of galaxies with a realistic distribution of sizes, it also meets requirements for a 2D cosmic shear analysis from space. If used on fainter galaxies or for 3D cosmic shear tomography, existing algorithms would need calibration on simulations to avoid introducing bias at a level similar to the statistical error. Requirements on hardware and calibration data are discussed in more detail in a companion paper. Our analysis is intentionally general, but is specifically being used to drive the hardware and ground segment performance budget for the design of the European Space Agency's recently selected Euclid mission.

A simple, yet general, formalism for the optimized linear combination of astrophysical images is constructed and demonstrated. The formalism allows the user to combine multiple undersampled images to provide oversampled output at high precision. The proposed method is general and may be used for any configuration of input pixels and point spread function; it also provides the noise covariance in the output image along with a powerful metric for describing undesired distortion to the image convolution kernel. The method explicitly provides knowledge and control of the inevitable compromise between noise and fidelity in the output image. We present a first prototype implementation of the method, outlining the steps taken to generate an efficient algorithm. This implementation is then put to practical use in reconstructing fully sampled output images using simulated, undersampled input exposures that are designed to mimic the proposed Wide-field InfraRed Survey Telescope (WFIRST). We examine results using randomly rotated and dithered input images, while also assessing better-known "ideal" dither patterns: comparing results, we illustrate the use of the method as a survey design tool. Finally, we use the method to test the robustness of linear image combination when subjected to practical realities such as missing input pixels and focal plane plate scale variations.

Optimal linear image combination

Wide‐field survey instruments are used to efficiently observe extended regions of the sky. To achieve a large field of view and to provide a high signal‐to‐noise ratio for faint sources, many modern instruments are undersampled. However, in undersampled detectors, sensitivity variations across individual pixels can severely impact science programs that require high photometric precision. To address this, a near‐infrared spot projection system has been developed. With this system, 1.7 μm cutoff detectors were characterized, and the effect of subpixel nonuniformity was studied. The measurements demonstrate that for detectors with near 100% internal quantum efficiency, 1% photometry can be achieved with a point‐spread function (PSF) size of about half a pixel. For detectors with large subpixel nonuniformity, photometric errors become negligible only if the PSF size is more than about two pixels.

Subpixel Response Measurement of Near‐Infrared Detectors

Wide-field survey instruments are used to efficiently observe large regions of the sky. To achieve the necessary field of view, and to provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio for faint sources, many modern instruments are undersampled. However, precision photometry with undersampled imagers requires a detailed understanding of the sensitivity variations on a scale much smaller than a pixel. To address this, a near-infrared spot projection system has been developed to precisely characterize near-infrared focal plane arrays and to study the effect of sub-pixel non uniformity on precision photometry. Measurements of large format near-infrared detectors demonstrate the power of this system for understanding sub-pixel response.
