This paper presents a design of prototype filters for quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks. To minimize the value
of reconstruction error for near-perfect reconstruction (NPR), linear optimization has been applied. Variable and
combinational window functions with high side-lobe-fall-off-rate (SLFOR) have been used to design lowpass prototype filters. Use of window functions resulted in simple implementation. High SLFOR of combinational windows reduced the energy leakage due to aliasing from one sub-band to the other. The proposed optimization algorithm takes a few seconds on Pentium processor.

A simple alias-free QMF system with near-perfect reconstruction

In this paper, we report the design equations for FIR filter synthesis by using some recently reported combinational window functions. The performance of these filters is compared with FIR filters designed by using Kaiser window (prolate spheroidal wave function based). We also suggest some corrections in the set of design equations for FIR filter synthesis by using raised cosine window. The variable window functions used in this study other than Kaiser and raised cosine window provide filters with better side lobe fall off rate. This feature can be utilized for better suppression of images associated with interpolators.

Design of FIR filters using variable window families: A comparative study

As per classification of the window functions, the Z-windows are grouped in the category of steerable side-lobe dip (SSLD) windows. In this work, the application of these windows for the design of FIR filters with improved filter parameters has been explored. The numbers of dips with their respective positions in the side-lobe region have been compositely used to tailor the window shape. Filter design relationships have been established and included in this paper. Simultaneously, an application of these Z-window based FIR filters in designing two-channel quadrature mirror filter (QMF) bank has been presented. Better values of reconstruction and aliasing errors have been achieved in contrast to the Kaiser window based QMF bank.

Studies on Z-Window Based FIR Filters

A set of windows whose normalized half main-lobe widths fall between those of rectangular and the Hanning or Hamming windows, is proposed. These windows are compared with Kaiser's near-optimum zeroth-order Bessel and first-order Bessel windows. The results show that the new windows compare very favourably with Kaiser's windows. The distinct advantage of the windows is their very simple form, similar to that of a Hamming window. As an example of the use of these windows, an estimate of the log power spectrum of a signal consisting of two sinusoidal tones of unequal amplitudes is considered and compared with the estimates using other windows.

A set of windows for high resolution spectral analysis

It is well known that the design of nonrecursive digital filters of the lowpass, symmetric bandpass and highpass types using the window function approach is simple and quite easy to implement. It has already been shown that the I0-sinh family of window functions gives designers flexibility because of its adjustable parameter. In this paper, two other well-known window function families, namely the I1-cosh and raised-cosine types, which have variable parameters to control the ripple, are considered. Expressions are derived for filter order in terms of ripple magnitude and transition band-width. The performance of these two families are compared with the modified zeroth-order Bessel (I0-sinh.) family and the results in the time and frequency domains are presented.

The performance of nonlinear power spectral estimation methods is studied from the viewpoint of resolution. The methods considered are the maximum entropy method, the maximum likelihood method, the least-squares method, Prony's energy spectral-density method, the singular-value decomposition technique and the autoregressive moving-average power spectral-estimation method. The data model used comprises two sinusoidal signals of equal amplitudes immersed in white Gaussian noise. The minimum resolution that can be obtained for all the power spectral-estimation methods considered has been studied for different data lengths and signal-to-noise ratios and the results are tabulated. >

Resolution capability of nonlinear spectral-estimation methods for short data lengths

A simple ground clutter model has been analysed using nonlinear methods of power spectral estimation and the performance of these methods has been studied. The methods considered are the maximum entropy method (MEM), the maximum likelihood method (MLM), the leastsquares method (LSM), the autoregressive moving average(ARMA) method and Prony's energy spectral-density estimation (PESD). The performance of these powerspectral-estimation methods has been studied for different data lengths and different model orders.
