Antifungal effect of essential oils on southern yellow pine

The hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol and water extract of aerial parts of the Eclipta prostrata were tested for its antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcusaureus. The antioxidant properties of those extracts were also investigated. Highest activity of both antibacterial and antioxidant were observed only in ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts, while hexane and water extracts did not show any significant results. The ethanol extract was fractionated by silica gel G 60-120 mesh column chromatography. Only the last three of 8 fractions of the ethanol extract were found to have significant activity only against S. typhi. This result indicates that the fractionated ethanol extract from Eclipta prostrata could be used against S. typhi pathogen.

Screening of antibacterial and antioxidant activities of leaves of Eclipta prostrata (L)

The whole plant material of Portulaca quadrifida Linn. was collected and powedered. The powdered material was subjected to successive soxhlet extraction with petroleum ether (40-60), chloroform, ethanol and finally macerated with water so as to get respective extracts. Fluorescence characters of powdered material were analysed under ultraviolet light and under ordinary light, which signifies their characteristics. Physicochemical parameters such as total ash value, acid insoluble ash value and water soluble ash value were determined which were 9.76, 0.94 and 5.8% respectively. Moisture content, foreign organic matter, crude fibre content, alcohol soluble extractive and water soluble extractive were also determined. The percentage yield of petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and water were 2.8, 2.0, 2.4 and 12% respectively. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of different extracts was carried out. The results were positive for tannins,flavonoids and triterpenoids in petroleum ether extract. Chloroform extract showed positive test for tannins only, ethanolic extract exhibited positive test for alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, glycosides, tannins, amino acids and saponins where as aqueous extract was found to be positive for flavonoids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, amino acids and saponins. These secondary metabolites are the active constituents of Portulaca quadrifida Linn. and may be responsible for its pharmacological activities.

In vitro. investigation of the antimicrobial activity of a crude methanol extract of leaves of Callistemon rigidus. R.Br. (Myrtaceae) revealed potential antibacterial activity against a broad spectrum of multidrug-resistant human pathogens. Agar well diffusion assays of the test extract established significant concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus., vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus., vancomycin-resistant Escherichia coli., extended spectrum β.-lactamase-producing E. coli., and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas. spp.

Antimicrobial Potential of Callistemon rigidus.

Wild plants, pregnancy, and the food-medicine continuum in the southern regions of Ghana and Benin

The screening of African medicinal plants, utilized in traditional herbal remedies in Ghana West Africa for their antibacterial and antifungals activities, is reported in this paper. Of ten plants tested, extracts of five (Phyllanthus niruri, Ageratum conyzoides, Acanthospermum hispidum, Cassia alata, and Sida acuta) had activity against the Gram positive microorganism Staphylococcus aureus including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). None of these ten plants have previously had their anti-MRSA activity or lack of activity documented. Hexane extracts from three plants (Portulaca quadrifida, Ageratum conyzoides, and Newbouldia lavis) show remarkable anti-fungal activity against Aspergillus fumigatus. Four plants (Phyllanthus niruri, Portulaca quadrifida, Ageratum conyzoides, and Newbouldia laevis) have strong anti-Candida activity. This paper may be the first documentation of Portulaca quadrifida in vitro anti-C. albicans and anti-A. fumigatus activity.
