Spectroradiometric Detector Measurements: Ultraviolet, Visible, and Near-Infrared Detectors for Spectral Power

The PTB primary standards for radiant power in Braunschweig are the German national standard for detector calibrations within the spectral range of 200 nm to 2,5 μm. This paper presents the progress in development and optimization of a high accuracy measurement facility using a cryogenic radiometer as the primary standard. The following features are highlighted: method of dynamic power substitution; temperature dependence of the absorptance of the cavity; error reduction by distance-error-free calibration transfer; and concept of window-correction-free transfer.

Present State of the PTB Primary Standard for Radiant Power Based on Cryogenic Radiometry

This paper presents the results of investigations of the spectral responsivity in terms of radiant power within the infrared spectral range. Large-sized InGaAs photodiodes of 10 mm × 10 mm and an InGaAs trap detector were studied within the spectral range 500 nm to 1900 nm. The spectral responsivity of this reflection trap detector with three photodiodes is compared with that of a single InGaAs photodiode (photodiodes all of the same type). The temperature effect on the spectral responsivity is measured within the temperature range 10 °C to 30 °C. The results, which are important for calibration of transfer standards for optical communication, are discussed in terms of spectral quantum efficiency.

Spectral characterization of Ge trap detectors and photodiodes used as transfer standards

This paper addresses the question of accurate measurement of optical power at the wavelengths and power levels of interest to the telecommunications community. In particular, we examine the calibration of power meters that are destined for use in a field environment. Connectors and adapters are shown to skew the measurements, leading to errors attributable to reflections from the connector or to angular dependence of detector response. Calibration data are taken using two popular connector types: a biconic and an SMA type. The data are sufficient to illustrate the problem but definitive conclusions cannot be drawn regarding variability of performance with connector or connector type, because of the limited data.
