This report gives results of a study of the bulk mechanical properties of samples of nanocrystalline Cu and Pd consolidated from powders prepared by inert gas condensation. Fourier analysis x-ray diffraction techniques, used to determine average grain size and mean lattice strains of the as-consolidated samples, show grain sizes in the range of 3–50 nm and lattice strains ranging from 0.02–3%. Sample densities range from 97–72% of the density of a coarse-grained standard. Microhardness of the nanocrystalline samples exceeds that of annealed, coarse-grained samples by a factor of 2–5, despite indications that sample porosity reduces hardness values below the ultimate value. Uniaxial tensile strength of the nanocrystalline samples is similarly elevated above the value of the coarse-grained standard samples. Restrictions on dislocation generation and mobility imposed by ultrafine grain size are believed to be the dominant factor in raising strength. Residual stress may also play a role. Room temperature diffusional creep, predicted to be appreciable in nanocrystalline samples, was not found. Instead, samples appear to show logarithmic creep that is much smaller than the predicted Coble creep.

Mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline Cu and Pd

Nanocrystalline fcc metals have been synthesized by mechanical attrition. The crystal refinement and the development of the microstructure have been investigated in detail by x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. The deformation process causes a decrease of the grain size of the fcc metals to 6–22 nm for the different elements. The final grain size scales with the melting point and the bulk modulus of the respective metal: the higher the melting point and the bulk modulus, the smaller the final grain size of the powder. Thus, the ultimate grain size achievable by this technique is determined by the competition between the heavy mechanical deformation introduced during milling and the recovery behavior of the metal. X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis of the nanocrystalline powders reveal that the crystal size refinement is accompanied by an increase in atomic-level strain and in the mechanically stored enthalpy in comparison to the undeformed state. The excess stored enthalpies of 10–40% of the heat of fusion exceed by far the values known for conventional deformation processes. The contributions of the atomic-level strain and the excess enthalpy of the grain boundaries to the stored enthalpies are critically assessed. The kinetics of grain growth in the nanocrystalline fcc metals are investigated by thermal analysis. The activation energy for grain boundary migration is derived from a modified Kissinger analysis, and estimates of the grain boundary enthalpy are given.

Structural and thermodynamic properties of nanocrystalline fcc metals prepared by mechanical attrition

A plasticity theory is developed for a powdered metal compact. The yield criterion used for sintered powdered metals is modified for describing asymmetric behavior of powdered metal compacts in tension and in compression. Three parameters α, δ, and p are involved in the yield function. The two parameters, α and δ, are determined from the behavior of sintered powdered compacts as functions of relative density R. Green strength vs relative density R relationship for powdered metal compacts is used for defining completely the yield function with the effect of relative density. Predictions are made for compaction pressures as functions of relative density for unidirectional, bidirectional and isostatical compaction, and compared with experimental data for copper and iron powders. Also yield surfaces for various density levels are compared with the experimental data with copper powders.

Deformation characterization of powdered metals in compaction

A study on the development of a substitution process by powder metallurgy in automobile parts

The factors governing the strength of cold-pressed metal powder compacts have been investigated. It is concluded that the most important parameters are freedom from oxidation and the plastic properties of the powder particles. These determine the roles played by surface energy and powder geometry in powder compaction.
