A new test object has been developed that generates images of transducer beam patterns on B-mode hardcopy. The extent and depth of the transducer focal zone are measured from these images. The predictions made from test object images were verified in the clinical images obtained from two 3.5-MHz focused transducers. Using the test object images, we have found that we can make a more rational selection of transducer for each clinical situation.

The enhancing of obtained images may be done by means of image processing methods, whose general theoretical possibilities are considered. Some of the most important applications of the processing of images to medical problems are described in this chapter, with special emphasis on the optical methods, although digital and electronic procedures are also mentioned. In addition, some methods that may be classified as procedures for obtaining enhanced images and, which do not really involve image processing are also described in the chapter. The processing of images may be performed by means of optical, digital, or analog electronic methods. All three methods are useful, each one having its own advantages and problems.

I Optical and Electronic Processing of Medical Images

Ultrasonovision is a system for the measurement and visualization of ultrasonic fields which operates by interferometrically measuring the displacement amplitude of the acoustic wave. Its unique features include: high sensitivity, large dynamic range, wide angular response, good resolution, broad frequency range, and the capability for reflective or transmissive imaging.
