Based on the relationship between the current yield surface and the reference yield surface, a new model, called the three-dimensional unified hardening model for overconsolidated clays (the UH model), is proposed in this paper. A current yield surface is used to describe overconsolidated behaviour, and a reference yield surface to describe the yield characteristics corresponding to normally consolidated clays. The UH model can model many characteristics of overconsolidated clays well, including stress-strain relationships, shear dilatancy, strain-hardening and softening, and stress path dependence behaviour. The key feature of the model is the adoption of a unified hardening parameter that is independent of stress paths. Based on the SMP criterion and the corresponding transformed stress method, the proposed model can be applied conveniently to three-dimensional stress states. Compared with the Cam-clay model, the UH model requires only one additional clay parameter, the slope of the Hvorslev envelope. The validity of this new model is confirmed by data from triaxial drained and undrained compression and extension tests for clays with different overconsolidation ratios, true triaxial tests with different Lode's angles, and cyclic loading tests.

An elasto-plastic description of two distinct volume change mechanisms of soils

Following a tunnel excavation in low-permeability soil, it is commonly observed that the ground surface continues to settle and ground loading on the tunnel lining changes, as the pore pressures in the ground approach a new equilibrium condition. The monitored ground response following the tunnelling under St James's Park, London, shows that the mechanism of subsurface deformation is composed of three different zones: swelling, consolidation and rigid body movement. The swelling took place in a confined zone above the tunnel crown, extending vertically to approximately 5 m above it. On the sides of the tunnel, the consolidation of the soil occurred in the zone primarily within the tunnel horizon, from the shoulder to just beneath the invert, and extending laterally to a large offset from the tunnel centreline. Above these swelling and consolidation zones the soil moved downward as a rigid body. In this study, soil-fluid coupled three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed to simulate the mechanism of long-term ground response monitored at St James's Park. An advanced critical state soil model, which can simulate the behaviour of London Clay in both drained and undrained conditions, was adopted for the analyses. The analysis results are discussed and compared with the field monitoring data. It is found that the observed mechanism of long-term subsurface ground and tunnel lining response at St James's Park can be simulated accurately only when stiffness anisotropy, the variation of permeability between different units within the London Clay and non-uniform drainage conditions for the tunnel lining are considered. This has important implications for future prediction of the long-term behaviour of tunnels in clays.

Modelling of long-term ground response to tunnelling under St James's Park, London

This paper presents a theoretical framework for predicting the post-liquefaction deformation of saturated sand under undrained cyclic loading with emphasis on the mechanical laws, physical mechanism, constitutive model and numerical algorithm as well as practical applicability. The revealing mechanism behind the complex behavior in the post-liquefaction regime can be appreciated by decomposing the volumetric strain into three components with distinctive physical background. The interplay among these three components governs the post-liquefaction shear deformation and characterizes three physical states alternating in the liquefaction process. This assumption sheds some light on the intricate transition from small pre-liquefaction deformation to large post-liquefaction deformation and provides a rational explanation to the triggering of unstable flow slide and the post-liquefaction reconsolidation. Based on this assumption, a constitutive model is developed within the framework of bounding surface plasticity. This model is capable of reproducing small to large deformation in the pre- to post-liquefaction regime. The model performance is confirmed by simulating laboratory tests. The constitutive model is implemented in a finite element code together with a robust numerical algorithm to circumvent numerical instability in the vicinity of vanishing effective stress. This numerical model is validated by fully coupled numerical analyses of two well-instrumented dynamic centrifuge model tests. Finally, numerical simulation of liquefaction-related site response is performed for the Daikai subway station damaged during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake in Japan.

Large post-liquefaction deformation of sand, part I: physical mechanism, constitutive description and numerical algorithm

Modern ideas of thermomechanics are used to develop families of models describing the elastic/plastic behaviour of cohesionless soils deforming under triaxial conditions. Once the form of the free energy and dissipation potential functions have been specified, the corresponding yield loci, flow rules, isotropic and kinematic hardening rules as well as the elasticity law are deduced in a systematic manner. The families contain the classical linear frictional (Coulomb type) models and the classical critical state models as special cases. The generalized models discussed here include non-associated flow rules, shear as well as volumetric hardening, anisotropic responses and rotational yield loci. The various parameters needed to describe the models can be interpreted in terms of ratio of the plastic work, which is dissipated, to that which is stored. Non-associated behaviour is found to occur whenever this division between dissipated and stored work is not equal. Micro-level interpretations of stored plastic work are discussed. The models automatically satisfy the laws of thermodynamics, and there is no need to invoke any stability postulates. Some classical forms of the peak-strength/dilatancy relationship are established theoretically. Some representative drained and undrained paths are computed. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
