The experiment was carried out at Entomology department, Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Dhaka, Bangladesh for dose fixation and in the field of two different locations viz. Jute Agriculture Experimental Station (JAES), Manikganj and Jute Research Sub-Station, Tarabo, Narayanganj were selected for evaluation of nine acaricides against jute yellow mite during the jute growing season (April-August) 2018 & 2019 following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Revenge 1.8EC(Abamectin 1.8%), Power Prid 95SP (Cartap 92% + Acetamiprid 3%), Lock 12SC(Chlorphenpyr 10%+ Emamectin Benzoate 2%), Parker 75 WG (Acetamiprid 50% + Buprofezin 25%), Brinka 24 SC (Spirodiclofen 24%), Guardian 40WDG(Emamectin Benzoate 20% + Thiamethoxam 20%), Aceto 40WDG(Acetamiprid 40%), Flame38WDG(Abamectin 2%+ Imidacloprid 36%), Aim Zox 10EC(Hexythiazox 10%EC) @ 600ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 500ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 225gm/ha, 600ml/ha, 600ml/ha, 500ml/ha, 280ml/ha and 30gm/ha respectively respectively were found effective and economic in the pot experiment for controlling jute yellow mite at 3th day after spray. Among these insecticides, the highest percent reduction of jute yellow mite in 2018 (97.12%) as well as more yield (3.17 ton/ha) over control was found in plot treated with Revenge 1.8EC (Abamectin 1.8%) in Manikganj. In 2019, the highest percent reduction of jute yellow mite (96.45%) was found in plot treated with Lock 12SC (Chlorphenpyr 10%+ Emamectin Benzoate 2%) and highest in Manikganj and highest yield (3.20ton/ha) was found in Aim Zox 10EC (Hexythiazox 10%EC) treated plot in narayanganj. Overall, All tested insecticides were found effective significantly giving more than 88% reduction of infestation and more than 2.45 ton/ha fibre yields at both field experiments at two years.

Effect of acaricides on yellow mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus infestation in jute and its response to fibre yield

This research aimed to make the application to detect stress for the college students. By early detecting stress on college students, it could help them to cope with their stress and avoid the negative impact of the stress. The Holmes-Rahe Readjustment Rating Scale was used to detect stress based on student’s life events. Each event had its score. There were 31 questions provided by the system. The final score would conclude the stress categories. Using the Forward Chaining Inference Engine, the system would collect the fact of the student’s life and give the result by accumulating scores on questions posed to the users from every question. The system also provided the reminder feature that led to continuous monitoring of stress condition in the students. About 65 correspondents who were selected using random sampling were asked to fill out questionnaires regarding this system after they tried the application. With the continuous monitoring, the researchers find that this system gives a result that all users have decreased their score of stress levels. Moreover, the correspondents rate that the design of the application is good enough, and the system is interesting and useful for helping students to provide a solution for stress.

Web-Based Expert System to Detect Stress on College Students

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of relatively cheaper, safer inputs of compatible management combination on yellow mite. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with seven treatments replicated thrice. Two spraying of each treatment was done at 15 days interval. The effect of treatment was significant on post treatment mite population recorded after spray for both the season. Among the treatments, T5 [Lecanicillium lecanii (2x108 cfu/gm)@3gm/lit at 35 DAS+Spiromesifen 240 SC@0.7 ml/lit at 50 DAS] was found to be the most effective combination. The post treatment observation during 2015 and 2016 at 7 days after treatment indicated significantly less number of mites i.e.(1.47 and 2.30 mites/sq. cm) and (1.02 and 0.83 mites/sq. cm) respectively in the treatment T5. Among the treatments, maximum plant height (222.24 and 221.14 cm) yield (36.29 and 37.44 q/ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.25 and 1.32) were also observed in treatment T5.

Bio-rational management of yellow mite in dark jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) under Terai region of West Bengal

An experiment was conducted during pre-kharif season of 2016 and 2017 to determine the efficacy of relatively cheaper, safer horticultural mineral oil on yellow mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus). The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with seven treatments [T1mineral oil @ 3 ml/litre at 35 and 50 days after sowing, T2mineral oil @ 6 ml/litre at 35 and 50 DAS, T3mineral oil @ 9 ml/litre at 35 and 50 DAS, T4-Neem oil @ 3 ml/litre at 35 and 50 DAS, T5mineral oil @ 3 ml/litre + neem oil @ 3 ml/litre at 35 and 50 DAS and T6Control] replicated four times. Two scheduled spraying of each treatment was done on standing jute crop at 15 days interval. The effect of treatments was significant on post treatment mite population recorded after spray for both the cropping season. Among the treatments, T5 was found to be the most effective combination. The post treatment observation during 2016 and 2017 at 7 days after treatment indicated significantly less number of mites i.e. (1.08 and 0.84 mites cm) and (0.83 and 0.41 mites cm) respectively in the treatment T5. Within the treatments, maximum plant height (216.92 and 206.64 Original Research Article Sarkar et al.; CJAST, 39(18): 77-82, 2020; Article no.CJAST.58689 78 cm) and yield (34.68 and 28.28 q ha) were also observed in treatment T5. Considering the effectiveness against mite on jute as well as the environmental safety, mineral oil might be suggested as biorational component of IPM for effective management of yellow mite.

Bio-efficacy of Mineral Oil against Yellow Mite in Dark Jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) under Terai Region of West Bengal

Jute (Corchorus olitorius L.= tossa jute and C. capsularis L.= white jute) is a traditional crop of nearly 300 years old with annual commercial value and provides livelihood to more than 5 million rural farm-families mostly located in the eastern part of India. A web-based expert system has been developed with the aim of improving decision-making by jute growers and other users. Knowledge was obtained from the literature and experts. The knowledge was then represented in the knowledge base of the expert system in a series of rules and heuristics. The system is a client-server application supported by a data base containing information of two domains-fibre production and seed production. Both the domains contain management information involving diagnosis and treatment to reduce losses due to weeds, diseases, insect-pests (biotic stress) and hydric stress (logging and drought), respectively, responsible for 22, 12.9, 11 and 25% of the total fibre crop loss of 23% annually in India. This integrated stress management is a part of the crop management system for judicious utilization of all components. The system is enhanced by photographs and drawings to assist the user in stress management of jute crop at the farm level. This user-friendly expert system can be helpful as a decision tool for farmers, technicians and policy makers towards early identification of the harmful agents and hydric stresses, their economic management and for education purpose as well.
