Multimedia and imaging databases

SUMMARY The Active HYpermedia Delivery System (AHYDS) facilitates the access to multimedia information over a large-scale network and wide spectrum of media. We developed intelligent access facilities that build on the access paradigms supported by current web applications. This facility generalizes not only different kinds of logical data models (relational, object, hyperlink), but also access mechanisms of multimedia applications to make them customizable and scalable. This paper proposed the distributed management mechanism of the AHYDS platform. The major contribution of this paper is the mechanism for distributed multimedia delivery management over large-scale network and heterogeneous environment. We also propose the mechanism to manage huge multimedia data.

The Distributed Management Mechanism of the Active HYpermedia Delivery System Platform

The paper describes the design concept and the implementation of the imaging database, Online Image Delivery System (OLIDS). We propose a new framework to support vertically parallel image processing in multimedia database systems. We present a generic and customizable framework for specifying an image query execution plan that permits the DBMS to optimize and execute parallel image processing. Moreover, it is important to provide the multimedia applications with the capability for customizing the information server according to specific requirements. This customization capability also provides both challenges and opportunities in building high performance multimedia and image systems. Applications such as Active hypermedia project or MODOS (Museum project between LRMF (France), NMWA and NACSIS (Japan)) demonstrate the usefulness of the customizable feature of the application oriented DBMS, Phasme, a microkernel database system, tested and extended inside NACSIS.

High performance multimedia database system support for image processing

Emerging distributed information systems combine local-area network information systems and wide-area network management to deliver multimedia information. Typically, these distributed information systems are based on multiple sites and multiple servers. In this worldwide network dimension, query processing balancing and data placement management have a key role to play, due to the large number of possible processing sites and due to the information types. We propose the design of an experimental distributed DBMS called TOSDHIM (TOtal System for Distributed and Heterogeneous Information Management) to provide high performance in distributed and heterogeneous information systems. In this paper, we present the architecture and implementation of TOSDHIM and discuss its operating characteristics. In addition, TOSDHIM provides a general, customisable platform for the development of new algorithms for distributed query optimization, storage management and scalable query processing of multimedia information. This flexibility is primarily due to a customisable architecture, integrating dynamic resource management and load balancing supervision, that permits autonomous, local dynamic query optimization to be made regarding data placement, query execution location and storage management.
