A cohort of tadpoles of the chorus frog, Pseudacris triseriata, on Isle Royale, Michigan, was marked to determine the effect of body size and date at metamorphosis on survivorship to maturity. The cohort was classified at metamorphosis into four categories based on size and date of metamorphosis: large-early, small-early, large-late, and small- late. The number of frogs in each category that returned to breed on the study area was monitored for the following 2 yr. Long larval period and small body size at metamorphosis influenced recruitment to the breeding population by delaying maturity. Frogs that meta- morphosed at large size maintained their size advantage at maturity. Large body size and early date at metamorphosis increased survivorship to maturity by enhancing the chance that reproductive size was attained within 1 yr of metamorphosis. Frogs that were recap- tured in the 2nd yr after metamorphosis, when all frogs had attained mature size, were from all four categories in the same proportions marked at metamorphosis, indicating that unless breeding during the Ist yr led to higher mortality of large individuals, survival rate after metamorphosis was not related to size or date at metamorphosis.

Adult recruitment in chorus frogs: effects of size and date at metamorphosis'

Many organisms can adjust to a changing environment by developing alter- native phenotypes that improve their fitness. Our understanding of phenotypic plasticity is largely based upon observations from single species responding to two different environ- ments and measuring a single plastic trait. In this study, I examine predator-induced phe- notypic plasticity in tadpoles by observing how six species of larval anurans respond to five different predator environments in 11 different traits (seven morphological traits, two behavioral traits, growth, and development). The results demonstrate that behavioral and morphological plasticity may be ubiquitous in larval anurans. The six prey species exhibited different responses to the same predator species, and each prey exhibited different responses to different predator species. This suggests that responses to a particular predator may not serve as general defense against all predators; rather, prey express predator-specific suites of responses. I also compared relative differences in plasticity among species and among traits. In contrast to earlier findings using only two predator environments, I found that different anurans possess similar degrees of plasticity for most of their traits when reared in a large number of environments. In addition, behavioral traits were always more plastic than morphological traits. Finally, I examined trait integration to address whether there were apparent trade-offs among traits and limits imposed by the abiotic environment. Trait integration, or the degree of correlated responses among traits across predator environments within a prey species, was very low. This further suggests that the suites of responses are predator specific and may be under independent directions of selection in different predator environments. Trait correlations across prey species indicated that there is an apparent trade-off between tail fin depth and body size. This relationship is supported by selection studies within prey species. Relating the responses to the pond permanence habitat gradient over which the amphibians exist, I found that species inhabiting more temporary ponds possess higher general activity levels, shallower tail fins, and larger bodies; these traits are known to result in more rapid growth. In a companion paper, I quantify the predation risk of the 30 predator- prey combinations and examine the relationships between prey response and predation risk.

Morphological and behavioral plasticity of larval anurans in response to different predators

Amphibian populations are declining globally at an alarming rate. Pesticides are among a number of proposed causes for these declines. Although a sizable database examining effects of pesticides on amphibians exists, the vast majority of these studies focus on toxicological effects (lethality, external malformations, etc.) at relatively high doses (parts per million). Very few studies focus on effects such as endocrine disruption at low concentrations. Further, most studies examine exposures to single chemicals only. The present study examined nine pesticides (four herbicides, two fungicides, and three insecticides) used on cornfields in the midwestern United States. Effects of each pesticide alone (0.1 ppb) or in combination were examined. In addition, we also examined atrazine and S-metolachlor combined (0.1 or 10 ppb each) and the commercial formulation Bicep II Magnum, which contains both of these herbicides. These two pesticides were examined in combination because they are persistent throughout the year in the wild. We examined larval growth and development, sex differentiation, and immune function in leopard frogs (Rana pipiens). In a follow-up study, we also examined the effects of the nine-compound mixture on plasma corticosterone levels in male African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis). Although some of the pesticides individually inhibited larval growth and development, the pesticide mixtures had much greater effects. Larval growth and development were retarded, but most significantly, pesticide mixtures negated or reversed the typically positive correlation between time to metamorphosis and size at metamorphosis observed in controls: exposed larvae that took longer to metamorphose were smaller than their counterparts that metamorphosed earlier. The nine-pesticide mixture also induced damage to the thymus, resulting in immunosuppression and contraction of flavobacterial meningitis. The study in X. laevis revealed that these adverse effects may be due to an increase in plasma levels of the stress hormone corticosterone. Although it cannot be determined whether all the pesticides in the mixture contribute to these adverse effects or whether some pesticides are effectors, some are enhancers, and some are neutral, the present study revealed that estimating ecological risk and the impact of pesticides on amphibians using studies that examine only single pesticides at high concentrations may lead to gross underestimations of the role of pesticides in amphibian declines.

Pesticide mixtures, endocrine disruption, and amphibian declines: are we underestimating the impact?

The known diversity of dart-poison frog species has grown from 70 in the 1960s to 247 at present, with no sign that the discovery of new species will wane in the foreseeable future. Although this growth in knowledge of the diversity of this group has been accompanied by detailed investigations of many aspects of the biology of dendrobatids, their phylogenetic relationships remain poorly understood. This study was designed to test hypotheses of dendrobatid diversification by combining new and prior genotypic and phenotypic evidence in a total evidence analysis. DNA sequences were sampled for five mitochondrial and six nuclear loci (approximately 6,100 base pairs [bp]; x¯ = 3,740 bp per terminal; total dataset composed of approximately 1.55 million bp), and 174 phenotypic characters were scored from adult and larval morphology, alkaloid profiles, and behavior. 10 – the biology of metamorphosis

The description of anuran embryos and larvae is facilitated by the use of staging tables, and such tables are indispensible to many studies involving frog life-history materials. Earlier papers in this field by the present author and others adapted existing tables to this purpose. Since this literature now involves two systems for numbering the larval stages, a brief review of the problem is in order, and a simplified table adequate for staging "generalized" developmental series will be presented. The proposed table is original only to the extent that it is a simplification of those already in existence.
