[1] Aseismic deformation transients can emerge as a natural outcome of the rate and state friction processes revealed in laboratory fault-sliding experiments. When that constitutive formulation is applied to model subduction earthquake sequences, transients can arise spontaneously for certain effective stress () variations with depth. We show that if interstitial fluids are present and pore pressure is near-lithostatic around and downdip from the frictional stability transition, transients with recurrence intervals of ∼1 year are predicted on the basis of laboratory friction parameters and their temperature (hence depth) variations. The recurrence interval decreases with and reaches 14 months when is ∼2–3 MPa. Dimensional analysis and numerical studies show that the fault response primarily depends on a parameter W/h*. Here the high pore pressure zone extends distance W updip from the stability transition, and h* is the stable patch size for steady sliding. Evidence that such fluid conditions may actually be present is independently provided by the occurrence of nonvolcanic tremors as apparent responses to extremely small stress changes and by petrological constraints on expected regions of dehydration for the shallow dipping subduction zones where transients are observed. Transient sequences can also be triggered by a modest, one-time, step-like interseismic stress perturbation on the subduction fault, due to nearby earthquakes, or to pore pressure changes, e.g., during episodes of metamorphic fluid release. Properties of triggered transients and future thrust earthquakes depend on the interseismic time when the perturbation is introduced, its relative location along the subduction fault, and its magnitude.

Tectonic and geological framework for gas hydrates and cold seeps on the Hikurangi subduction margin, New Zealand

New trace element and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope data for lavas from the active Tonga-Kermadec arc in the southwest Pacific, the volcano of Niua fo'ou in the back-arc Lau Basin, and Pacific Ocean sediments from DSDP Sites 204 and 275, and ODP Site 596, are integrated with existing geochemical data for lavas from the Lau Basin, Samoa, the Louisville Ridge Seamount Chain (LR-SMC) and the extinct Lau Ridge arc, giving new insights into the petrogenesis of lavas in an active arc - back-arc system. Geochemical variations in Tonga-Kermadec arc lavas are the result of (1) differences in the amount and composition of the material being subducted along the arc, and (2) pre-existing heterogeneities in the upper mantle. Differences in the material being subducted beneath the arc have an important influence on the chemistry of the arc lavas. At the Kermadec Trench, ∼1 km thick layer of sediment is being subducted beneath the arc, compared with ∼200 m at the Tonga Trench. This results in the high Th/U and more radiogenic Pb isotope compositions of Kermadec lavas compared with Tonga lavas. The latter have Pb isotope compositions intermediate between those of Pacific sediments and Pacific mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB), suggesting that much of the Pb in these lavas is derived from subducting Pacific Ocean crust. This is supported by the Pb isotope signatures of the subducting LR-SMC, which are also observed in lavas from the northern Tongan islands of Tafahi and Niuatoputapu. High field strength element (HFSE) and heavy rare earth element (HREE) concentrations are generally lower in Tongan lavas (particularly those from northern Tongan islands) than in Kermadec lavas. The Tonga Ridge basement, the proto-Tonga arc lavas (ODP Site 839) and the older Lau Ridge arc lavas are generally less depleted than the modern arc lavas. In the back-arc region, upper-mantle depletion as inferred from HFSE and HREE contents of the lavas broadly increases eastwards across the Lau Basin, whereas the subduction signature and volatile (CO and F) contents increase eastwards towards the modern arc. These observations suggest thai depletion is due to melt extraction during back-arc extension and vokanism, together with a long 'residence time' of mantle material within the mantle wedge. The upper mantle beneath the northernmost end of the Tonga arc and Lau Basin contains an ocean-island basalt (OIB) component derived from the Samoa plume to the north. This is reflected in high concentrations of Nb relative to other HFSE in lavas from Niua fo'ou, and Tafahi and Niuatoputapu islands at the northern end of the Tonga arc. Pb isotopes also suggest an LR-SMC contribution into Tafahi and Niuataputapu. Trace element and isotope modelling is used to investigate the combined effects of varying mantle source depletion and subduction on the geochemistry of the arc lavas. The results suggest that the arc lava geochemistry can be explained largely by the balance between a relatively constant subduction input of Pb, Th, U, Cs, Ba, Sr, Rb, K and Sc [corresponding to 0.001-0.005 weight fraction of the Stolper & Newman (1994, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 121, 293-325] 'HO-rich component' composition), into the overlying, but variably depleted mantle wedge.

Geochemical Evolution within the Tonga–Kermadec–Lau Arc–Back-arc Systems: the Role of Varying Mantle Wedge Composition in Space and Time

Isotopic composition of helium, and CO2 and CH4 contents in gases produced along the New Zealand part of a convergent plate boundary

SUMMARY We present the first New Zealand-wide study of surface wave dispersion, using ambient noise observed at 42 broad-band stations in the national seismic network (GeoNet) and the Global Seismic Network (GSN). Year-long vertical-component time-series recorded between 2005 April 1 and 2006 March 31 have been correlated with one another to yield estimated fundamental mode Rayleigh wave Green’s functions. We filter these Green’s functions to compute Rayleigh wave group dispersion curves at periods of 5‐50 s, using a phase-matched filter, frequency‐time analysis technique. The uncertainties of the measurements are estimated based on the temporal variation of the dispersion curves revealed by 12 overlapping 3-month stacks. After selecting the highest quality dispersion curve measurements, we compute group velocity maps from 7 to 25 s period. These maps, and 1-D shear wave velocity models at four selected locations, exhibit clear correlations with major geological structures, including the Taranaki and Canterbury Basins, the Hikurangi accretionary prism, and previously reported basement terrane boundaries.

Ambient Noise Rayleigh Wave Tomography of New Zealand

The Hikurangi margin of eastern North Island, New Zealand, represents the feather edge of the Indian plate at its convergent boundary with the subducting Pacific plate. A migrated seismic reflection profile across this margin clearly displays the structural evolution of an accretionary prism. A 25-km-wide band of “protothrusts” is delineated between the toe of the slope and a converging seamount; this illustrates an early stage in the seaward propagation of a deformation front. Landward-tilted trench-slope basins are separated by ridges that have clearly defined thrusts, which appear to sole out at a decollement. The decollement continues at an angle of only 3° beneath the 150-km-wide margin to a depth of 14 km near the coast where it coincides with an onshore zone of high seismicity.
