Hybrid metal matrix composites (Hmmc) are found to be more superior than the conventional composite materials because of their improved mechanical properties, which can be suited for an extensive range of engineering applications. Automobile and aerospace industries widely make use of hybrid composites as they possess excellent corrosion, wear resistance, low density, and high strength. This paper displays the strategy to build the hybrid composite utilizing Stir casting Method. Present investigation includes the creation of composites utilizing boron carbide (2%, 4%, 6% volume) and Red mud (2% volume) as the reinforcements and Structural aluminium as the matrix. Experimental investigation of wear analysis of the composites was carried out according to the L9 Taguchi method. The designated number of experiments was accomplished to probe the impact of control factors on the specific wear rate (SWR) of the developed composites. ANOVA was carried out and Wt%. Reinforcement was found to be the decisive factor on the SWR of the developed hybrid composite. The Confirmatory test was successfully carried out and the computed error was found to be varying from 0.878% to 2.58%.

Graphene-reinforced metal matrix composites: fabrication, properties, and challenges

There is a growing demand for the light weight nano composite materials for advanced material applications, such as aerospace, automobile, electrical appliances, biomedical etc. because of their high specific strength/stiffness, improved temperature stability, improved wear and corrosion resistance etc. Properties of aluminum matrix can be significantly improved with well dispersed/distributed low concentration of nano reinforcements. Various types of carbon based nano reinforcements such as carbon nanotube, graphene, carbon nanofibers, fullerenes etc. are widely used for the fabrication of advanced metal matrix nano composites materials. This chapter discusses graphene based aluminum matrix hybrid nano composites for the applications in advanced material fields. Starting with the graphene as a prospective nano reinforcement for the hybrid nano composites, various common methods for the manufacturing of hybrid nano composites, mechanism of reinforcement dispersion/distribution in the hybrid nano composites are discussed. This followed by microstructure and properties of hybrid nano composites are included. The chapter has been concluded with few prospective applications of graphene based aluminum matrix hybrid nano composites in advanced materials fields.

Graphene Based Aluminum Matrix Hybrid Nano Composites

Researchers were compelled to create composites as alternatives to the already used engineering materials due to the industrial desire for fresh, promising materials with superior mechanical and tribological properties. Due to their superior characteristics, aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) with the appropriate class of particulate/particle reinforcements have been shown to have a wide range of tribological applications. A thorough evaluation of the sliding wear response of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) in a dry environment using a pin-on-disc wear tester has been attempted in this review study. A discussion regarding wear performance of Al monolithic alloy and its composites has been made with respect to varying process parameters (e.g. normal load, sliding distance, and speed) and the concentration of different particle reinforcements incorporated in the production of aluminium matrix composites. The existing paper provides a synergic presentation of the effects of various intrinsic and extrinsic variables on wear characteristics, leading to the novelty and uniqueness of this review article.

Dry sliding wear response of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs): a critical review

Composite materials are extensively being employed in the aerospace and automobile industries where they could have replaced conventional materials owing to their high strength/weight ratio. In this direction, research has been vigorous to help turn out composite materials of superior quality with enhanced capabilities. Hence, this paper presents an attempt at fabricating a Hybrid Metal Matrix Composite (HMMC) with Aluminium Alloy AA2219 reinforced with various weight fractions of Silicon Carbide (SiC), Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) and Wollastonite (CaSiO3) in varying proportions to achieve better wear properties and weight reduction for applications like cast iron disc brake rotor. A two-step Stir Casting process is selected to prepare the composites. Standard Orthogonal Array is used to determine the number of experiments that need to be conducted in order to study the impact of the reinforcement materials using interaction effect plots. Pin-on-Disc wear tests and hardness tests were carried out on all the samples and the effect of the reinforcements studied from the test data. SEM is carried out on the composition with the best wear behaviour.
