Hydrogen embrittlement of X2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3 super duplex stainless steel welded joints under cathodic protection

Laser welding is used in modern industry, having many advantages comparing to traditional welding technologies. Nowadays, industry sectors such as shipbuilding, automotive and aviation can’t be imagined without laser processing technologies. Possibility of increase of welded joint properties, autogenous welding and high level of process automation makes the technology of laser welding perspective part of the industry. Physical multidimensional processes complexity requires a deeper understanding of the impact of laser welding parameters on the quality of welded joints for industrial implementation. The paper presents results of microstructure investigations of laser beam welded stainless steel under various welding parameters. Welded joints was achieved by Ytterbium fiber laser type without the use of the filler material. Material for test was 2205 ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel (DSS) plates with thickness of 8 mm in delivery condition. The objectives of this research was to investigate influence of laser welding parameters on weld geometry of buttwelded joints. Investigations of bead shape revealed correlation between laser beam focus position and weld penetration depth.

Influence of Parameters of Laser Beam Welding on Structure of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel

The redistribution of alloying elements and the crystallographic characterizations in wire and arc additive manufactured (WAAM) super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) was investigated from the wire to the final as-deposited structure. The results showed that elemental partitioning between austenite and ferrite was suppressed in the last layer and the solidified droplet. The high Ni content but low Cr and N contents in the initial state of the intragranular austenite (IGA) confirmed the predominance of the chromium nitrides acted as the nucleation sites. Gathering of nitrogen was found more distinct in the coarsening IGA, Widmanstatten austenite (WA) than the grain boundary austenite (GBA). The columnar epitaxial ferrite presented a strong texture in the deposition direction, while the and orientations was found in the austenite. Random orientations of the intragranular secondary austenite was revealed. The Rotated Cube texture of the austenite grains were consumed by the “recrystallization” textures (Brass, Rotated Brass, Cu, R, E, and F) caused by the austenite reformation. The low-angle interphase boundaries between austenite and ferrite were predominated in the as-deposited wall, and, at which, the K–S orientation took the crucial part. A Taylor factor analysis revealed that through fabrication via additive process, the austenite became oriented “harder” and contributed most to good mechanical properties. The textured microstructure contributed about a 2.6% higher engineering strain in the Z direction and a 27.8 MPa higher yield strength in the X direction.

Element partitioning and electron backscatter diffraction analysis from feeding wire to as-deposited microstructure of wire and arc additive manufacturing with super duplex stainless steel

In this paper the influence of tack welds distribution and welding sequence on angular distortion of the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welded joint was tested. Additionally, the effect of welding current on angular distortion was assessed. For research X2CrTiNb18 (AISI 441) stainless steel (2.5 mm thick) was chosen. During research specimens were prepared with different distributions of tack welds. Then they were welded by different welding sequences with the use of different welding current values. After welding the angular distortion of each specimen was measured by using the coordinate measuring machine. In the next step specimens were cut. Cross-sections were polished and the metallographic macroscopic testing was conducted to check the geometry of performed welds. Performed experiments allowed determining the optimal tack weld sequence and welding parameters for welding thin stainless steel sheets.

Influence of tack welds distribution and welding sequence on the angular distortion of tig welded joint

Micro-texture and corrosion behavior of dissimilar joints of UNS S32750 stainless steel/UNS N08825 Ni-based superalloy

Much development work has been performed worldwide on the welding of duplex stainless steels (DSSs), where losses in base metal nitrogen during welding have been compensated by filler metal and nitrogen additions to the shielding gas. However, some heat-affected zone (HAZ) microstructural changes have not always responded consistently to nitrogen mixtures added to the shielding gas. In this work, DSS weld microstructures were investigated as a function of weld thermal cycles and shielding gas nitrogen content. Physical simulations, actual gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) in controlled
atmospheres, and entrapped nitrogen measurements were
used to relate to the weld austenite-to-ferrite (A/F) phase ratios. Results showed the thermal cycles had a stronger effect on the weld A/F ratio than shielding gas nitrogen content. Physical simulations and actual GTAW trials also showed the A/F ratio changes in the opposite way in the fusion zone than in the HAZ. Reheating was also found to have an important effect on the microstructure. The above findings should allow fabricators to better design the welding process with DSS. Better control of nitrogen-containing shielding gas mixtures, along with heat input limitations, should result in more consistent weld properties and wider use of DSS by industry.
