LASER induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used for the quantitative analysis of Cu–Ni alloy of known composition (75% Cu, 25% Ni) using the one line calibration free-LIBS (OLCF-LIBS), self-calibration-LIBS (SC-LIBS), calibration free LIBS (CF-LIBS), time of flight-mass spectroscopy (TOF-MS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). For the LIBS-based studies, the plasma was generated by focusing the beam of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (532 nm, pulse energy about 200 mJ, 5 ns pulse duration) while the sample was placed in air at an atmospheric pressure. Plasma temperature about (9500 ± 300) K was calculated by the Boltzmann plot method using the neutral lines of Cu and Ni whereas the electron number density was calculated (2.0 ± 0.5) × 1016 cm−3 from the Stark broadening of an isolated Cu line as well as using the relative intensities of the neutral and singly ionized optically thin lines in the Saha–Boltzmann equation. The elemental compositions determined by different LIBS methods and standard techniques are; OLCF-LIBS (69% Cu and 31% Ni), SC-LIBS (72% Cu and 28% Ni), CF-LIBS (74% Cu and 26% Ni), TOF (74% Cu and 26% Ni), EDX (75% Cu and 24.5% Ni), XRF (73% Cu and 24.7% Ni), and LA-TOF (74% Cu and 26% Ni). It is demonstrated that the CF-LIBS method gives compositions comparable with that determined by LA-TOF, EDX, or XRF, which is also in agreement with the certified reported composition.

A comparative study of Cu–Ni Alloy using LIBS, LA-TOF, EDX, and XRF

We have used two calibration free laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) methods for the quantitative analysis of Pb–Sn alloys with different compositions. The first method is based on Boltzmann plots where the elemental concentration is determined from the intercept along the y-axis whereas the second method is the electron density conservation method, in which elemental compositions are determined by comparing the experimentally measured number density with the theoretical results obtained by CF-LIBS. The neutral spectral lines of lead and tin have been used for the estimation of plasma temperature by the Boltzmann plot method whereas the Saha–Boltzmann equation has been used to calculate the electron number density. By comparing the results of both CF-LIBS methods, it is concluded that the CF-LIBS (electron number density conservation) method is more appropriate than the CF-LIBS (Boltzmann plot method) for the quantitative elemental analysis.

A Comparative Study of Calibration Free Methods for the Elemental Analysis by Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

In this study, the influence of distance between the focusing lens and target surface on the plasma temperature of copper induced by a Nd:YAG laser was investigated in the atmosphere. The plasma temperature was calculated by using the Cu (I) lines (510.55 nm, 515.32 nm, and 521.82 nm). The Cu (I) lines were recorded under different lens-to-sample distances and laser pulse energies (15.8 mJ, 27.0 mJ, 43.4 mJ, 59.2 mJ, and 76.8 mJ). The results indicated that the plasma temperature depended strongly on the distance between the focusing lens and target surface. With the increase in the distance, the plasma temperature firstly rose, and then dropped. This could be attributed to the interaction between the tailing of the nanosecond laser pulse and the front portion of the plasma plume, the plasma shielding effect, and the expanding of the plasma. Calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for quantitative elemental analysis of materials

Laser‐Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is well recognized as a promising tool for in situ/remote elemental analysis of environmental, archeological, clinical, and hazardous samples. With the aim of quantifying trace elements in such samples, using LIBS technique, an echelle spectrograph‐ICCD system with broad range and good resolution has been assembled. Various important parameters of this system were studied and optimized. Conditions for getting good quality LIBS spectra and signal for multielemental analysis have been achieved, and these are discussed and illustrated in this paper.
