In August 2005, a team surveyed the effects of the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami on the southern coast of Oman. Runup and inundation were obtained at 41 sites, extending over a total of 750 km of shoreline. Measured runup ranged from 3.25 m in the vicinity of Salalah to a negligible value at one location on Masirah Island. In general, the largest values were found in the western part of the surveyed area. Significant incidents were documented in the port of Salalah, where a 285-m-long vessel broke its moorings and drifted inside and outside the port, and another ship struck the breakwater while attempting to enter the harbor. The general hazard to Oman from tsunamis may be greatest from the neighboring Makran subduction zone in western Pakistan.

Naturally occurring shoals and near-shore reefs act as good wave attenuators. Artificial creations of such nature identical attenuators are called artificial reefs. They are being increasingly deployed since the past decade, as artificial reefs may be included under soft engineering approach to protect a coast in an environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing manner. Conventional hard approaches like construction of sea wall, groins, revetments, bulkheads and break waters have been known to create negative environmental impacts. Using artificial reefs as shore protection measure one may achieve wave energy dissipation without creating much destructive effects on coastline and its species compared to hard engineering approaches. As they are entirely off the shore and submerged, the aesthetics of the beach is not lost and these types of structures also have the potential to improve the local ecology and recreational amenity like snorkeling and diving. Hence they are often called multipurpose reefs combining the aspects of coastal protection, aquaculture and surfing. Past studies (Pilarczyk et al., 2003) (Shirlal et al., 2007) shows that the artificial reefs are viable shore protection elements dissipating wave energy which are capable of bringing down the transmitted wave height past the structure. Firth et al., (2014) indicate that the artificial reefs made of gabions were colonized by twelve to fourteen different benthic species depending on location of deployment .This author brings out that the Gabions potentially have important habitatforming value as they are analogous to natural boulders. Black et al., (2001) had come out with the design aspects of narrow neck beach in gold coast and also for incorporating it for surfing, public amenity and coastal protection. Thus there appears to be several positive aspects in using artificial reefs for coastal protection. The objective of the present investigation is to examine the wave dissipation and transmission characteristics with reference to reef parameters. The results of physical model experiments to find the performance of the Gabion Box Artificial Reef will be brought out.

Tidal inlet morphodynamics through numerical prediction and measurements

At present various oxide of metal semiconductors play a significant role in the field of electronics. Most of the semiconductor devices exploit the special characteristics of the junction between a p-type and n-type semiconductor. These devices can be made extremely small in size and they are incredibly fast in their response. Generally metal have good reflectivity in the electromagnetic region of infrared and visible radiation. Indium oxide material doped with tin (ITO) is recently used in the substrate material for various applications, because it has special properties of low resistivity and high optical transmittance in the visible region. In this paper, we prepare ITO films with different tin concentration (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%) using acrylamide sol gel dip coated method and its results were reported. TCO materials have good electrical conductivity and optical transparency, and also it has n-type semiconductor with a band gap between 3.5 and 4.3 eV. An X-ray study indicates all the prepared samples had bixbyte structure. Optical behaviour of materials can be understood in the near infrared and visible spectrum. Some optical parameters of refractive index, extinction coefficient and dielectric constant of ITO films are calculated from the data received from the UV transmission studies. Using W-D model the dispersion of refractive index was calculated. The optical band gap, oscillator energy, dispersion energy and optical conductivity and N/m* ratio were estimated and this material is well suitable for dye sensitized solar cell and sensor application.

Optical performance of Tin doped Indium Oxide (ITO) thin films prepared by sol gel dip coating techniques using acrylamide route

The focus of this research work is towards the understanding of the hydraulic and hydrodynamic performance of submerged rigid and elastic plates when exposed to regular waves and quantifying the energy loss attributed to elasticity For this purpose, four different plates with different flexural rigidities have been chosen for the wave flume experiments for studying the hydroelastic problem over a range of rigidity parameters Furthermore, variation of pressures, reflection and transmission characteristics due to regular waves acting on flexible plate were investigated Based on the systematic experimental study and investigation of the results it was found that the elasticity in the plate significantly improves the performance of the horizontal plate as a wave barrier in the lower B/L (Relative plate width) region where the rigid plate is not effective The enhancement in energy loss due to higher harmonic generation is about 20-30%
