An economical design of buildings based on performance takes into account the dissipation of seismic energy accumulated in the structure. In a tall structural wall, plastic hinge formation happens only at the base of the wall and ductility resources of the rest of the wall remains untapped. A solution to increase the performance of a reinforced concrete structural wall is to create a slit zone with shear connections. Yielding of this shear connections may cause increase in energy dissipation. The aim of these solutions is to create an ideal structure for tall multi-storey buildings, that has a rigid behavior at low seismic action (the shear connections behave elastic) and turns into a ductile one in case of a high intensity earthquake action (the shear connections are crushed). In the first part of this study the pushover analyses for slit walls were not very concluding because when the shear connections fail the convergence stops, this being caused by strength degradation and a large displacement of the wall. To capture the strength degradation it was decided to do a cyclic analysis. For the nonlinear analysis it was used a finite element program, ANSYS.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Slit Walls With ANSYS (II)

Pre-cast construction is gaining significance in general and urban areas in particular. It is gaining more popularity with the rapid urban infrastructure growth. In this context G+11 storey residential building with precast reinforced concrete load bearing walls has been attempted for analysis. The structural system consists of load bearing walls and one-way slabs for gravity and lateral loads have been taken for analysis using ETABS. Various wall forces, displacements and moments have been worked out for different load combinations. Data base is presented for the worst load combination. This work is limited to the analysis of structural elements only not the connection details.

Analysis of multi storey building with precast load bearing walls

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate a dissipative reinforced concrete structural wall that can improve the behavior of a tall multi-storey building. The main objective is to evaluate the damage of a dissipative wall in comparison with that of a solid wall. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, a comparative nonlinear dynamic analysis between a dissipative wall and a solid wall is performed by means of SAP2000 software and using a layer model. The solution to increase the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete structural wall is to create a slit zone with short connections. The short connections are introduced as a link element with multi-linear pivot hysteretic plasticity behavior. Seismic and failure behavior simulation for RC shear walls under cyclic loading based on vector form intrinsic finite element

The frequent occurrence of the major earthquakes in the Indian subcontinent, and construction of tall buildings, especially over the last two decades demands for the construction of earthquake resistant buildings. Many of the tall buildings had collapsed in recent earthquakes and the reasons attributed were poor design and construction practices. The objective of this work is to discuss the possibilities of modeling reinforcement detailing of reinforced concrete models in practical use. To carry out the analytical investigations, the structure is modeled in a Finite Element software ANSYS. The specimens are modeled as (i) discrete model and (ii) smeared model. It reports the results of the analysis of the flanged shear wall with two different types of modeling under cyclic loading. The consequences of small changes in modeling are discussed and it is shown that satisfactory results are obtained from the two models.
