An improved approach based on sequential method for the AC-DC power flow calculation is proposed in this paper. This approach solves the convergence problem caused by voltage violations at AC buses during the power flow calculation for the DC subsystems. The convergence property can be significantly improved by adjusting the converter transformer tap position flexibly. In order to adjust the tap position of the converter transformer flexibly, three mainly modifications are proposed. Firstly, the equations for whole DC systems are decoupled into individual DC systems so as to easily figure out which DC system's tap position needs adjustment. Secondly, the tap ratio of a converter transformer is selected as an alternative state variable to replace the cosine of the control angle when necessary. Thirdly, the Newton-Raphson method is utilized to solve DC subsystems instead of the method using the linear equations. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis of the advantages of the proposed approach is also presented. Numerical simulations and practical applications show that the proposed approach meet the requirement of different system operating conditions and has advantages in terms of convergence and speed. The proposed approach has been successfully integrated into the Energy Management System (EMS) for China Southern Power Grid.

An Improved Approach for AC-DC Power Flow Calculation With Multi-Infeed DC Systems

The aim of this paper is to derive a general AC/DC power flow model with Voltage Source Converter Multi-Terminal High-Voltage Direct Current Systems (VSC MTDCs). The equations of AC, DC grids, and VSCs are formulated in augmented rectangular coordinates. The proposed model is composed of two nodal equations and two power constraints for each AC bus, as well as one nodal equation and one power constraint for each DC bus. In this model, the VSC equations are included in the AC and DC grid model—its power balance equation and one of the control equations are regarded as the power constraints of the AC bus connected to it, whereas the other control equation is regarded as the power constraint of the DC bus connected to it. Therefore, the number of equations of the proposed model is determined only by that of AC and DC buses, and the model is systematically well organized; the variety of VSC control strategies and AC/DC linking configurations does not influence the overall structure. The proposed approach enables to solve the load flow of the most general AC/MTDC, consisting of multiple AC and DC grids connected by VSCs, and is suitable for control strategies including the droop control and any new ones in the future. The model also leads to higher computational efficiency. By demonstrations on AC/DC power systems with several VSCs, this method is proved to be effective, flexible, and efficient.

A General Unified AC/DC Power Flow Algorithm With MTDC

A serial AC-DC integrated load flow algorithm for variable speed offshore wind farms is proposed. It divides the electrical system of a wind farm into several local networks, and different load flow methods are used for these local networks sequentially. This method is fast, more accurate, and many factors such as the different wind farm configurations, the control of wind turbines and the power losses of pulse width modulation converters are considered. The DC/DC converter model is proposed and integrated into load flow algorithm by modifying the Jacobian matrix. Two iterative methods are proposed and integrated into the load flow algorithm: one takes into account the control strategy of converters and the other considers the power losses of converters. In addition, different types of variable speed wind turbine systems with different control methods are investigated. Finally, the method is demonstrated using an 80-MW offshore wind farm.

The power flow algorithm for balanced and unbalanced bipolar multiterminal ac–dc systems

This paper presents an algorithm for the sequential solution of the ac/dc power flow, which is proposed for the analysis of multi-terminal HVDC systems (MTDC). This sequential power flow algorithm can be implemented easily in an existing ac power flow package and is very flexible when it compared with unified methods. Gauss-Siedel algorithm is used to solve dc power balance equations, it offers two keys advantages: very fast and simple computational implementation, and errors do not accumulate during the calculation. The algorithm is tested using the WSCC 3-machine, 9-bus system with a 3-terminal MTDC network and results compared with those obtained from DIgSILENT® PowerFactoryTM demonstrating the validity of the proposed algorithm. As aggregate value, a representative test case of the projected scheme for the phase I of the Supergrid project on the North Sea is presented, the proposed approach presented in this paper is used to calculate DC power flows for some scenarios.

Solution of ac/dc power flow on a multiterminal HVDC system: Illustrative case supergrid phase I

This paper presents a new approach to the power flow analysis in steady state for multiterminal DC-AC power systems. A flexible and practical choice of per unit system is used to formulate the DC network and power converter equations. A converter is represented by Norton's equivalent of a current source in parallel with a commutation resistance. Unlike in previous literature, the DC network equations are used to derive the controller equations for the DC system using a subset of specifications. The specifications considered are current or power at all terminals except the slack terminal where the DC voltage is specified. The control equations are solved by Newton's method, using the current injections at the converter terminals as state variables. Further, a systematic approach to the handling of constraints is proposed by identifying the priorities in rescheduling of the specified variables. The methodology is illustrated by example of a 5 terminal DC system (11 refs.)
