The simple theory of resistivity originally applied to pure liquid metals (Ziman 1961, Bradley et al. 1962) is formally extended to liquid alloys. In dilute solutions, size difference between solute and solvent ions can be allowed for, approximately, by a modification of the pseudo-potential of the solute, in a manner reminiscent of the modification of solute valency suggested by Harrison and Blatt (1957) in dealing with the resistance of solid alloys. The theory explains qualitatively a number of interesting features of the behaviour of liquid binary alloys, e.g. the failure of liquid solutions in polyvalent metals to obey the familiar rules of Nordheim and Linde. Some speculations on the anomalous behaviour of mercury amalgams are included. A bibliography of experimental results for both resistivity and density in liquid alloys is collected in Appendix II.

The neutron transformation of helium‐3 has been applied to neutron spectroscopy in the medium energy range in order to overcome the disadvantages of previous methods which have usually been based on neutron scattering. By observing the pulse‐height distribution when a proportional counter filled with helium‐3, krypton, and carbon dioxide is irradiated with neutrons, the spectrum can be obtained. Details of the counter construction and vacuum equipment for filling the counter are described. In the range of energy from thermal to 1 Mev the spread (relative standard deviation of a peak) is about 3% and the wall effect agrees with theoretical predictions. The pulse height varies linearly with energy and some evidence suggesting that the mean energy required to produce an ion pair in krypton for helium‐3 nuclei is about 6% greater than that for protons is presented. Helium‐3 Filled Proportional Counter for Neutron Spectroscopy

In this article we review the prospects of laser wakefield accelerators as next generation light sources for applications. This work arose as a result of discussions held at the 2013 Laser Plasma Accelerators Workshop. X-ray phase contrast imaging, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and nuclear resonance fluorescence are highlighted as potential applications for laser–plasma based light sources. We discuss ongoing and future efforts to improve the properties of radiation from plasma betatron emission and Compton scattering using laser wakefield accelerators for these specific applications.

In recent years a large number of conferences some‐what vaguely devoted to nuclear structure have been held both within and without the United States. While conferences, especially those abroad, are more than welcome, quite often such conferences tend to be too diffuse in their objective and more or less repetitive in their subject matter. The International Conference on Nuclear Sizes and Density Distributions held at Stanford University, Stanford, Calif., on December 17, 18, and 19 was, by definition, above this criticism. It concerned itself with a topic which had never before been the exclusive subject of any conference, and the manner in which it was organized by Dr. Hofstadter and his colleagues on the steering committee left no room for vagueness or confusion.
