Various embodiment include optical and optoelectronic devices and methods of making same. Under one aspect, an optical device includes an integrated circuit having an array of conductive regions, and an optically sensitive material over at least a portion of the integrated circuit and in electrical communication with at least one conductive region of the array of conductive regions. Under another aspect, a film includes a network of fused nanocrystals, the nanocrystals having a core and an outer surface, wherein the core of at least a portion of the fused nanocrystals is in direct physical contact and electrical communication with the core of at least one adjacent fused nanocrystal, and wherein the film has substantially no defect states in the regions where the cores of the nanocrystals are fused. Provided are a light emitting device, a light emitting device package, and a lighting system. The light emitting device includes a substrate, a light emitting structure on the substrate, the light emitting structure comprising a first conductive type semiconductor layer, a second conductive type semiconductor layer on the first conductive type semiconductor layer, and an active layer between the first and second conductive type semiconductor layers; a first electrode on the light emitting structure; and a patterned phosphor layer on the light emitting structure, wherein the patterned phosphor layer converts light generated from the light emitting structure into light having a wavelength longer than that of the light generated from the light emitting structure, and wherein the pattern of the phosphor layer exposes the first electrode.

A portable thermography camera system (100) renders a video image of a survey scene over a narrow spectral bandwidth corresponding with an absorption band of a gas plume to be rendered in the video image. The camera system forms a scene image onto a focal plane array (108) and generates a corrected image signal (162) corresponding with irradiance values at a plurality of locations of the scene image. The camera system further generates a temporally filtered image signal (168) corresponding with a temporal characteristics of the image signal (162) over a selected number of prior image frames. A difference block (166) reduces the temporally filtered image signal (168) by a scaling factor and produces a difference image (172) by subtracting the scaled temporally filtered image signal from the corrected image signal (162). The difference image is displayed on a video display device (132) improves contrast between the gas plume and background regions of the survey scene.

A quantum-dot infrared photodetector comprises a semiconductor substrate; a buffer layer formed on the semiconductor substrate; an undoped first obstructing layer formed on the buffer layer; a first quantum-dot layer formed on the first barrier layer; a heavily doped first contact layer formed on the first quantum-dot layer; a second quantum-dot layer formed on the first contact layer; an undoped second obstructing layer formed on the second quantum-dot layer; and a doped second contact layer formed on the second quantum-dot layer. In another embodiment, the first obstructing layer and the second obstructing layer may be formed optionally. The quantum-dot photodetector may increase photo current and constrict dark current such that detectability is improved and the operation temperature can be increased.

A combat IFF system, for use in a combat exercise or on the battlefield, including a helmet-mounted passive IFF response unit and a weapon-mounted IFF interrogatory unit for each soldier. Infrared (IR) signals are employed for both challenge and response. The IR response signal is a very narrowly-targeted reflection of the relatively narrow IR transmit signal, thereby minimizing interception opportunities. The transmit and response signals are encoded in a transaction that cannot be compromised even when either or both signals are intercepted and decoded by the enemy. The combat IFF system includes biometric anti-spoofing features that prevent any use by an enemy in possession of captured units. Military radio-frequency (RF) spectrum is not required so there are no bandwidth limitations on simultaneous IFF transactions in the battlefield. A combat IFF transaction is completed in milliseconds.

Secure covert combat identification friend-or-foe (IFF) system for the dismounted soldier

Techniques using QDIP technology to form imaging focal plane arrays capable of sensing one or more colors are disclosed. Hybridizing such QDIP arrays to supporting electronic circuitry (e.g., such as CMOS readout circuitry) enables the generation of an IR image that could be used for applications such as surveillance, night vision, and search and rescue operations.

Quantum dot infrared photodetector focal plane array

Multi-quantum well (MQW) spatial light modulator devices are disclosed that are capable of achieving reasonable quantum efficiencies and high contrast ratios in order to close an optical communication link by resolving the logical on or off state. The device both modulates and detects light through the use of the quantum well design and resonant cavity enhancement. Based on the materials (e.g., InGaAs/InAlAs) and their band structures, this device can be configured to communicate in the eye-safe wavelength range (e.g., 1550±20 nm). The device can be fabricated using standard photolithographic processes such as molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) reactive ion etching (RIE).
