A comparison study of raindrop size distribution among five sites at the urban scale during the East Asian rainy season

The large-scale monitoring of rainfall is of great significance in the research of meteorology, hydrology, and atmospheric measurement science. In recent years, with the quick development of communication satellite constellation, the use of earth-space link (ESL) to measure rainfall in the atmosphere is expected to be a potential approach for the large-scale monitoring of global rainfall. In this article, to verify the long-term performance of rainfall measurement using ESL, the data of an ESL at the Ku band and a Thies Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) in Nanjing were collected. The rainfall inversion model using ESL was optimized according to the height of 0 °C-layer from the radiosonde data of ten years, and the inversion results in the different types of rainfall were discussed. The results show that the rainfall inversed by the optimized ESL model are in good agreement with the rainfall measured by LPM (correlative coefficient is 0.985), the relative errors of rain intensity inversed by ESL in light rain, moderate rain, heavy rain, and extreme rain are 20%, 15.17%, 8.93%, and 8.99%, respectively. The average relative errors of rain intensity measured by the ESL in convective rainfall and stratiform rainfall are 16.01% and 26.59%, respectively.

Statistical Study of Rainfall Inversion Using the Earth-Space Link at the Ku Band: Optimization and Validation for 1 Year of Data

As one of the most critical elements in the hydrological cycle, real-time and accurate rainfall measurement is of great significance to flood and drought disaster risk assessment and early warning. Using commercial microwave links (CMLs) to conduct rainfall measure is a promising solution due to the advantages of high spatial resolution, low implementation cost, near-surface measurement, and so on. However, because of the temporal and spatial dynamics of rainfall and the atmospheric influence, it is necessary to go through complicated signal processing steps from signal attenuation analysis of a CML to rainfall map. This article first introduces the basic principle and the revolution of CML-based rainfall measurement. Then, the article illustrates different steps of signal process in CML-based rainfall measurement, reviewing the state of the art solutions in each step. In addition, uncertainties and errors involved in each step of signal process as well as their impacts on the accuracy of rainfall measurement are analyzed. Moreover, the article also discusses how machine learning technologies facilitate CML-based rainfall measurement. Additionally, the applications of CML in monitoring phenomena other than rain and the hydrological simulation are summarized. Finally, the challenges and future directions are discussed.

A Review on Rainfall Measurement Based on Commercial Microwave Links in Wireless Cellular Networks

Accurate rainfall observation data with high temporal and spatial resolution are essential for national disaster prevention and mitigation as well as climate response decisions. This paper introduces a field experiment using an E-band millimeter-wave link to obtain rainfall rate information in Nanjing city, which is situated in the east of China. The link is 3 km long and operates at 71 and 81 GHz. We first distinguish between the wet and the dry periods, and then determine the classification threshold for calculating attenuation baseline in real time. We correct the influence of the wet antenna attenuation and finally calculate the rainfall rate through the power law relationship between the rainfall rate and the rain-induced attenuation. The experimental results show that the correlation between the rainfall rate retrieved from the 71 GHz link and the rainfall rate measured by the raindrop spectrometer is up to 0.9. The correlation at 81 GHz is up to 0.91. The mean relative errors are all below 5%. By comparing with the rainfall rate measured by the laser raindrop spectrometer set up at the experimental site, we verified the reliability and accuracy of monitoring rainfall using the E-band millimeter-wave link.

Research on Rainfall Monitoring Based on E-Band Millimeter Wave Link in East China.

Forecasts of the amount and geographic distribution of snow are highly sensitive to a model's parameterization of hydrometeor fallspeed. Riming is generally thought to lead to particles with a higher mass and terminal velocity. Yet models commonly assume that heavily rimed particles such as graupel have a fixed density and that their settling speed is unaffected by turbulence in storms. Here we show automated measurements of photographed hydrometeor shape and fallspeed using a new instrument placed in Utah's Wasatch Mountain Range. The data show that graupel in low-turbulence conditions has a size-dependent fallspeed distribution with a mode near 1 m s−1, a result that is generally consistent with prior observations. However, the distributions are broadened by turbulence and there is a correspondence between particle density and air temperature. In high turbulence and at low temperatures, any sensitivity of fallspeed to particle size disappears.

Observed Influence of Riming, Temperature, and Turbulence on the Fallspeed of Solid Precipitation

Commercial 1.164 km long microwave link (CML) data with frequencies of 72.75 and 82.75 GHz (E-band) deployed in the Prague urban area were used to estimate the wet antenna attenuation (WAA). By analyzing the time series of WAA, a WAA model of E-band CML is proposed based on the long short-term memory neural network. The results show that the predicted value is consistent with the real value, especially when the attenuation fluctuation is not significant, but it understates cumulative rainfall when rain sharply increases. In addition, the performance of the model applied to the 72.75 GHz link is better than that applied to the 82.75 GHz link.

Wet Antenna Attenuation Model of E-Band Microwave Links Based on the LSTM Algorithm

To improve solid precipitation monitoring in the hydrology and meteorology field, 1-min precipitation data observed by the PARticle SIze VELocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer in Nanjing, eastern China, from February 2014 to February 2019 for all days with solid precipitation, were used to study the microphysical characteristics of winter precipitation. In this study, the empirical V-D (velocity–diameter) relationships and observed surface temperature are used for matching precipitation types, and the precipitation data are divided into rain, graupel, wet snow and dry snow. The results show that dry snow and wet snow have maximum Dm (mass-weighted mean diameter) and minimum log10Nw (normalized intercept parameter), while rain shows the opposite. Additionally, the μ-Λ (shape parameter–slope parameter) curve of dry snow and wet snow is very close, and the μ value of dry snow and wet snow is higher than that of graupel and higher than that of rain for the same Λ value. Furthermore, the Ze-S (equivalent reflectivity factor–precipitation intensity) relationships among different types of precipitation are significantly different. If only the Ze-S relationship of rain is used for quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), then, for small precipitation intensity, solid precipitation will be overestimated, while, for large precipitation intensity, it will be underestimated.
