This series of conflict management sessions help leaders learn and put into practice effective strategies for managing conflict.

Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing among Five Approaches (2nd Edition) [Book Review]

Increasing birthrates, immigration, teacher retirements, and attrition are fueling the
projected need for 200,000 new teachers annually over the next decade. The news
media regularly predict teacher shortages and raise concerns that teacher education
institutions will not be able to meet the demand for new teachers. Educators are
apprehensive that the rush to fill vacancies will scuttle recent progress in upgrading
standards for theprofession.Most importantly, they fear that a shortage of good teachers will undermine attempts to educate all children to meet the challenges of the new
century. Hence, issues of quantity, quality, and equity dominate current discussions
of the teaching pool.

The Community Capitals Framework: an empirical examination of internal relationships

The development of effective leadership capacity involves multiple factors including increasing students’ leadership self-efficacy, motivation to lead, and leadership skills. This study of 165 undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory leadership theory course explores the degree to which students report changes in these three areas of leadership from the beginning to the end of the course. Our analysis showed two important findings. First, students report significant gains in leadership self-efficacy, transformational and transactional leadership skill, and each measured form of motivation to lead at the conclusion of the course. Second, a closer examination shows that student learning is not across-the-board but, rather, differentiated. Students experience significantly different outcomes depending on their levels of self-efficacy and motivation to lead when they enter the course. These findings not only have broad implications for the way colleges and universities structure curricula around leadership development, but they also inform theoretical model-building regarding the process of student leadership development. Community leadership development education: promoting civic engagement through human and social capital

Community leadership development programs (CLDPs) have become increasingly common in rural areas as strategies for self-help development. Programs vary by sponsor, curriculum, and mission, and in recent years have been the subject of study for their designs and impacts. While the majority of studies use past participants as research subjects, this qualitative case study uses University Extension program administrators from one Midwestern state as informants to uncover perspectives on the purposes and challenges of community leadership development programming. The community capitals framework is employed as a mechanism for classifying the data and for advancing a broad program model that hinges on cultural capital – shared beliefs about who community leaders are, and the possibilities they together envision.
